I'll post a reply because why not. I shouldn't though because this thread is terrible but whatever.
Firstly, Gundam is literally a children's show, it isn't meant to be difficult to understand. The themes are relatively straightforward. Examples of good and bad individuals exist on both sides of the conflict, with the Federation only eeking out the moral high-ground due to the narrative focus and the warcrimes committed by Zeon at the start of the war. 0079 is less about the justifications or context of the war and more about surviving a conflict given the circumstances.
This is exemplified through Amuro connecting with the crew onboard White Base. He could've defected permanently, but his skills were needed to protect people that had been dragged into the war against their wishes, just as he had been. Hence the line, "Nothing feels as good as this!" in the last episode, where Amuro accepts White Base as his family in place of his distant, brain-damaged father, and his hopelessly pacifistic mother.
Second, Gundam was influenced and created in the aftermath of WWII, which is obvious. Zeon was modeled after the Axis powers, and was actually a critique of The Empire of Japan's war practices. This is not subtle at all nor is it intended to be. The hierarchy of Zeon is portrayed as noble and just which is in direct contrast to the practice of gassing fellow spacenoids and initiating a colonly drop. The OP even states that the war has killed off literally HALF of humanity. In spite of the leadership ordering and executing atrocities, the actual soldiers are portrayed in a fairly neutral, even positive light.
Third, the show has to be considered within the context of its time. It created many of the tropes we take for granted today. It even plays with some the cliches at the time, such as the main robot being created by the protagonist's father which is seen as a huge burden on Amuro.
