The setting on SAO is actually pretty interesting, it's the characters and writing in dialog in general that makes it a borefest with character without substance. This guys managed not only to make some funny jokes, they brought the setting to something we can actually believe (assholes on the internet, pop culture references, etc) instead of jap jokes that need a two page TN note for western audiences to actually understand and bland characters made for japanese self insert.

Both Twilight and SAO are young adult novels staring a bland, everyday MC that could be you, with an special attribute and with an informed ability to attract people and become really popular, but that somehow didn't had that popularity in real life/previous town before the start of the story. The love interest in both stories is special (rich ojou/vampire) incredibly attractive and devoted to the MC. There is some attend to grimdark in both, that somehow gets sidetracked by the need to sell a love story to a young market, and both have a rabid fanbase that take any insult to their favorite series way too personal.
So yeah, SAO is basically Twilight for weebs

I found it good for like a month. Then I rewatched it and the cringe finally set in.
