Everything about the experience was wholly divorced from reality, so whenever the two mixed it was kind of special and unique.

Shit was very different. Digital cameras weren't common. The average desktop PCs lacked the power to do proper photo editing, and even if they did, a great deal of people didn't have a connection worth a shit. Images were much, much smaller.
