I love despair, but in the end despair's just a tool you can use in stories. There's no real meaning to it by itself. Seeing characters overcoming the despair and earning the ending they deserve ("deserve" being subjective) is what really does it for me.

The idea is that Subaru has an inferiority complex toward his dad. Having him be integrated into the plot not only adds rationale for him of all people to be abducted randomly, but also adds internal conflict for him if he shows up as someone both as broken and as renowned as Reinhardt.
Subaru died hundreds of times to get that far, yet his dad would still be Mr. Gary Stu, just like at home. Nothing would have changed. It'd force him to question everything about himself, and, I'm sure his dad will offer him a way to transfer the curse to himself and go back to their world, alone. In the first loop, he comes to her and she actually knows he is going to die but does nothing and is minimally involved with him.
In the second loop, he comes to her and she lets him come to his senses in her library.
In the third loop, he comes to her and she provides him with information that could help him.
In the fourth loop, she comes to him and offers her unconditional protection.
My thoughts are that Subaru's memories and reliance on her grow stronger each loop, to the point where she can sense that he has a strong relationship with her, even if she does not remember it. She actually asks him in the second and third loops about his familiarity with her.
By the fourth loop the thoughts she reads from him are strong enough that she feels compelled to protect him.
So her exact knowledge of him does not carry over or change from loop to loop, but her understanding of their relationship does carry over. So her knowledge remains the same but their bond is constantly increasing (which is probably intended sincethe witch moved the save point to after their first meeting so that he would come to rely on Betty.)

Anyhow, I've been trying to think about what I like about this series so far, but there are just too many spoilers stuck in my head. I'll probably have to straighten it all out to think about it properly. Right now the pattern seems to be to introduce an all-too-familiar cast and scenario, with only a few hints that something is off, before twisting it around at the end and showing the first impression was more than a bit off.
I think the first thing I noticed that seemed off was actually just that Subaru was given "scary eyes" that didn't fit his apparent attitude, but that's not too strange on its own. However, the spoilers make it sound like it's actually relevant.

Nah. You're getting it backwards. Reinhardt is a huge Gary Stu who is beloved by existence, but it's not like he has the one power only a protagonist can have and it's not like what he does have is unsettling or nasty.
However, checkpoints and respawns with full memory is a power that doesn't really work in any hands besides that of the protagonist. The universe effectively seems to reset itself if Subaru dies, though some of that depends on whether the AUs are real or just simulations. But as far as Subaru is concerned, it basically works just like that. Time only moves forward as long as he's alive.
