What kind of reputation does anime have in your country?
>>
Only manchildren/kids and girls like it. With the shit they bring over her it's no wonder people think that.
>>
in the uk it is regarded as being hyper violent and sexual due to how it was marketed during the early 90's and the titles that were selected for release in that time period.
>>
Amongst civilians, it's seen as something only spergs and losers enjoy.

Among the military? Everyone from ghetto-escaping niggas to good ol Southern boys to beaners enjoys anime, regardless of branch.
>>
Switzerland here.

About one third of the youth watches anime. Some are surprisingly deep into it.
Was really surprised how many people like somthing rather hardcore like MonMusu, collecting tank's and shit.
>>
America says anime is for losers and social outcasts
>>
Gook here.

Still treated as "kiddy" entertainment.

Also, watching anime = pro-Japanese. I don't understand this though.

Eh, I've sort of noticed it. A lot of people are still in that mindset though that it's just highly sexual.

Top normie shit.
Everyone watches it. Even shit like Umaru.

We regularly discuss the latest episodes of dragon ball super on the street
>>

Your reply says otherwise.
>>
Here it's treated as kid's stuff with the same repeating offender (DBZ) over and over again due to nostalgia.

It doesn't help for conventions being too family friendly with jewish practices for raping wallets for content which is dissapointing.

Shitgal (Portugal) here.

I beg to disagree. With young adults no one really cares unless you're a walking stereotype and having basic knowledge of the medium is somewhat normal - at least it is not seen as tentacle porn, you know?

Canada.

No one really cares unless you try and talk about the weird anime (that is to say any anime with a non anime viewer). Most anime fans I meet IRL seem to be stoners or at least use pot to relax on weekends.

It's still pretty unknown to the average person, but most people who have heard of it are aware that it's not just Sailor Moon/DBZ/Akira variants.

In leafland, if you're between the ages of 25 and 18 right now, watching anime every night when you were 8-14 was one of the most average things a young boy could do.

Used to stay up all night watching shonenshit dragon ball, inu yasha, gundam, .hack//sign, naruto and FMA, and then spend the entirety of the week circlejerking anime with at least 10 other people throughout junior high and most of high school

YTV (the popular cartoon channel) used to air anime late in the night during the weekends throughout 2000-2004 so it was pretty much the highlight of most of our weeks growing up.

A good chunk of younger canadian adults are closet anime fans, or had anime phases when they were teenagers.

Polan here, many people recognize entry level series that aired here long time ago, like DBZ (with polish lector over french dub).
Aside form that, saying "I watch anime" would probably be a social suicide among normalfags. I don't recall seeing anything anime-related outside of internets, like anime clubs or manga being sold in your average bookstore.
I know a few people who watch anime, but they are overrepresented in my acquaintance sample since most of them are math and computer nerds. No one with power level anywhere close to hundreds of series though, mostly barely above an average saofag.
>>
>>141680831
Leave it to a tripfag to be retarded.
Most people don't give a shit. There are some misconceptions that anime is "weird cartoon porn," and it's usually associated with popular franchises, but nobody really cares.
Of course if you are an avid collector you'll be considered a nerd or geek, but that is true of any hobby. Regardless you will never get ostracized unless you're 15 years old with the self-esteem of an average harem protagonist.
>>
>>141680735
There's still a ton of younger weebs in Canada, I work in a bookstore and there's always 12 year olds flocking for the biggest current flavor of the month meme manga.

>>
I'm from Suomus and my impression is that anime is very poorly known outside of its fandom, is regarded as kids' entertainment, isn't show a lot on TV and isn't well available on DVD/BD.. Manga seems to be huge, but is probably considered for kids too.
>>

>>
>>141678081
Italy here
A lot of young people are into it and pretty much everyone around my age grew up watching DBZ, One Piece and other stuff.
Some people still consider anime and manga to be weird or childish, but unless you literally make fun of yourself by going around with a Naruto headband or won't shut up about it with people who don't care, no one's gonna give a shit.
>>
>>141683281

So it's really just one medium being spiteful over another because it's more popular?
>>
>>141683759
It's just that if something becomes popular enough it becomes socially acceptable.

Anime doesn't have a chance because of the deeply ingrained stigma that animation is for children, and the way it was introduced to America.
>>
>>141683926

Yet it's perfectly fine for the average person to like Seth MacFarlene shit and Adult Swim stuff.
>>
>>141679258
In the UK it was a friend mine from the Philippines that got me into animal in the first place

And actually somehow made most of my year try out one piece
>>
>>141684042
Well the exception to the rule is sitcoms. Those are ok because you aren't meant to take them seriously, and they're like the animation equivalent to newspaper comics.

Another problem anime has is that it's Japanese and a lot of Americans hate anything Japanese.
>>
>>141678167
EITHER you're viewed as an autistic man child, or they don't care atall, just another show to watch
>>
>>141684106
Anime I meant not animal
>>
>>141683926
>Anime doesn't have a chance because of the deeply ingrained stigma that animation is for children
Western animations are fairly popular among youths. I think it's the language/cultural barrier plus the whole sexualization thing. If westerners weren't such prudes anime would be more popular
>>
>>141684164
But then how do you explain things like Otakon?
>>
>>141678359

>>
>>141678081
Bulgaria. It seems to be turning pretty mainstream among teens. Anime-cons are a regular here and are always full to the top with cringy Tokyo Ghoul fangirls. Just walking around town on weekends is a sure chance to bump into some weebs, unironically wearing cat ears. It's disgusting.
>>
>>141684164
Sexual content in anime is a problem precisely because anime is supposed to be for children. American live action shows are more sexual than any TV anime, yet it's no problem because they're supposed to be for adults.

Stuff like Avatar and Thundercats 2011 (it was decent enough, too bad) goes into the right direction (was mostly aimed at 10+, too).
It's still ridiculous rare.
And hell, Venture Bros. basically has an advancing storyline and character development, but it's aimed at older teens, and it's not even a Simpsons-clone. I wish we had more like that.

Dhaka, the capital. Most urban parents can't/don't have the time and energy to chastise their children's online behaviour 24/7. They'll probably disinherit you if they catch you watching porn, but anime? Nah.

Of course, I am talking about a target demographic- the urban youngsters comprised of middle/higher income, who can afford decent unlimited internet to stream/download from kissanime(not good enough to download stuff from nyaa/other /a/ essentials). We've actually been having 2 comic cons for the last 4/5 years, in which anime fans are a large part of. Of course, shounen stuff is still the most popular(the big 3, DBZ, YYH and FMA:B) with only oldfags/more hardcore fans going into HxH, Inuyasha(which served as the gateway anime to the first watchers around 2006/7). Only within the last 2/3 years have I seen people watching season by season.

Also, why did you go there? Just curious. Have family?

Europe had some more "mature" cartoons for children that didn't assume their viewers where fragile idiots.
Stuff like Animals of Farthing Wood and Redwall.
US also made Prince Valiant in 1991, we watched this a lot as children.

We pretty much get no dubs, voice-overs only.
When it comes to anime, no one really watches those, most people >stream their cartoons with english or polish subs. I don't think there is any anime dub (or rather voice-over) industry in Poland, just a few series that aired long time ago.

On unrelated note, we also have infamously retarded title translations, one of the best being Rogue One translated word-for-word, with "rogue" as a noun and "one" as a number.
>>
>>141687042
It's how it's always been. Most things on TV have a lector and maybe that's better because most of the time polish dubs suck ass. And subs are uncommon outside cinemas, probably because of the "Ah don't wanna no fancy letters in my movies" attitude.

The cultural lag is quite interesting desu. You've got more and more global brands opening shop in Dhaka, people spending hundreds/even thousands woth in dollars in shopping, buying tickets to cricket world cup games, going to posh restaurants and spending money that can likely feed my entire family of 5 for lunch, and of course watching sex scenes in GoT(in their computers alone). On the other hand, you also have a ton of poverty that isn't hidden, dilapidated buildings, people bemoaning western clothing(especially of women's), saying that western shows harm society and yet watching shitty Hindi serials showing infidelity and general breakdown of our traditional families, which has a more pronounced effect. Seriously, a couple of years ago many stores began stocking some stupid dress worn by one of those heroin, charged a ton, and when some girls/married women didn't get it there a number of suicides, divorces etc. It even made into the national newspapers.
>>

Anime is slowly getting more popular in the US, but it never gets farther than entry level shit like KLK, SnK, Jojo, WPM, Hero Academia, etc. Also despite how many people watch subs around here, you're hard pressed to find anime fans IRL who aren't dubfags.

>>

Americans have an almost nonexistent knowledge of anime before the 90s. If you were an anime fan in the 80s you were buying Animeigo's localized VHS tapes and importing LDs from Japan. Before DBZ and Sailor moon there was Transformers (which is only half anime) and Speed Racer. And most people don't even know Speed Racer is anime.

Here in Chile nobody actually gives a shit about it, as long as you're not very eloquent. Anime was pretty common in TV during the 90s, hence people grew somehow accustomed.
Universities's campus are often used as anime conventions venues, and anime expos are bigger and bigger every day, and you even see people riding the subway wearing their cosplay but are minorities.
The last summer was the biggest Anime Expo ever and Asian Kung Fu closed the day with a concert.

I've a pretty decent powerlevel but I never talk about it unless the person likes anime. I have my personal collection of anime related things but nothing that stand out so much, like posters or a bunch of anime figures. My only anime figure is a Haruhi one.

In summary, nothing to be so ashamed, pretty normal as long as you don't scream it.

Teen girls fucking love it (Hetalia was huge here), and most teenagers and young people in general are weebs due to YTV airing anime all the time and school libraries being stocked with manga. I actually remember mine having stuff like Rosario + Vampire and Karin in mine, which was the best thing ever when I was 13.

Tumblr and SJW's will have zero effect on anime itself. The reason cartoons, comics and video games have been affected is because their creators are based in North America, but Japan is completely disconnected from the western political scene. The only thing they can do is complain, which will likely fall on deaf ears considering how little of a financial impact the west has on anime.

If they can't make Japan buckle they can complain enough to have laws passed that severely affect our access to anime and manga. Though before anything extreme like that happens we'd see them infiltrate localization companies and censor material as well as slip their agenda into dubs and translations. We already see that happen.
>You're not one of those gaymur gates are you?
And not necessarily outright censorship but just dumb childish localization like "roaarrrgh that's I love you in dragon".

Eh, the early 00's saw some Western stuff on BBC and Channel 4, but really there hasn't been that kind of success replicated again.

That and the BBC strangled the UK animation community to death at birth. We literally have none, all the animators who are worth a damn go to America. And because, thanks to the BBC churning out 100000 documentaries and dramas every year, there's no feasible competition either. Even the current BBC white paper is about restructuring the content rather then reducing the BBC monopoly.

So in the long term, UK anime communities going to have no presence on TV at all. Although Manga's been increasingly popular, with bookshops stocking more of it.

The only conceivable impact they could have is through sites like crunchyroll, which few people here use. Aside from that, torrenting is already illegal, so passing laws limited access would be pointless, and the people who upload torrents will always be one step ahead of the law anyhow.
