I legitimately don't get what's supposed to be that good about it. I'd give it a 6/10 at best. I loved the atmosphere, its themes and all that, the music was great too, but actual pacing, plot and characters were just straight up bad, completely unrelatable, and unlikable in my opinion. It was almost a chore to finish if I wasn't so intrigued how things will play out, only to be disappointed.

Lain is in my top 5 anime of all time, it was the top one when it released but right now I don't know if for me it's still the best, but it's up there with Stand Alone Complex and Legend of the Galactic Heroes.I met my current wife 14 years ago by talking with her about Lain at a comic book store.

I love it quite a bit. I saw myself in Lain in a lot of ways, from her disconnection to reality and people (and her desire to connect) and her personality. The atmosphere, visuals, and sound all satisfied my autism in a way where it felt like home.
Seeing her slowly lock herself way into the wired, and then jerk back to reality from Arisu's influence left a big impression me, and Lain accepting her role where everyone forgets her gave me a very bittersweet, lonely feeling and yet happy because she can go see Arisu any time she wants.
