DBZ was fun on its own merits. If you go from DB to DBZ expecting a spiritual sequel then yeah it's going to be disappointing. Vegeta's a killer, but there's no real indication that he was more evil than radditz, who chose to try and trick his brother into being evil rather than just kidnapping him, and then lied constantly to try and get the upper hand.

I would argue that is hasn't. Just the fact that we've gotten older and each arc largely was the same formula is the cause for it not aging too well. Dragonball has always been about simple story telling. Also I think its arcs repeating the same story over and over and over just isn't that captivating for a modern 18 to 35 audience.
