Jormungand's 'gun porn' has horrible animation though. A major reason why I dropped season 1 was because the gunfights looked so hilarious cartoony, with all the insane bullet dodging.

Is one of the best comedies around in my opinion. While it's highly referential it doesn't rely wholly on them for the comedy and just sprinkles it into larger gags. The western orientation of a lot of references doesn't go astray either.

Is as close to 10/10 as can be expected. While it's short it always hits its mark and does what it set out to do. There's no dead air; there's no flat jokes. For time in vs entertainment out it's hard to beat. For some it mightn't hit the highest notes but I appreciate its consistency and craft

It's just an absolute classic with some really solid comedy. The start is slow for a lot of people. There are a lot of characters to introduce and a lot of them come off one-dimensionally. By the end of the series however there's very few interactions that haven't been explored to some extent. Every character is unique and tends to have a personalised relationship to every other cast member.

It's sort of a cult classic at this point. It was one of my first proper shows past the 'entry-level' hump and pretty much one of the only ones that I still think is decent from what I watched back then.
It's the sort of show where I can literally find something new and fun every single time I watch it.
The DvD had the reference explanation subs and the fansubs had .pdfs with pages and pages of notes to explain things. I adore it.

most anime suck, so I don't give many things a full point. There are about ~40 anime I give full points to. If it's not complete shit then I'll give it a half point. Sometimes if there are three shitty but not completely unredeemable anime I'll give one point between the three of them. I don't take rating too seriously, it's a very crude, general way to impart opinions.
I think I'm pretty lenient, but other people tend to give much higher ratings than me on average so maybe not.

I found the whole thing to come together quite well. The first few episodes, I had no clue what was going on, but in the end it all made sense and all the strings seemed to connect pretty seamlessly.
But maybe that's because I went into it with absolutely no expectations. I liked it more for the presentation and characters and the narrative structure than for the story itself.

Running into a series that isn't a 'must watch' is a much purer experience in my opinion. There's no outsider factors it's just you rifling through the dirt to find a diamond in the rough rather than one at the store.

Haibane Renmei?
The first episode is a great stand-alone episode, so definitely try that one at least and see what you think of it.
The pacing of its story starts to drag towards the middle of the season, but once you're over that hurdle you'll have a lot of good thematically-grounded drama to enjoy.

When so many of your characters are immortal the audience isn't going to be too interested in "What's going to happen?". Making it non-linear does a good job of changing the question to "What exactly is happening?". I think it gives it a sense of mystery and tension that wouldn't be there otherwise.
I do agree that there isn't really much reason for it to be told in the specific order it chooses though. You could chop it up dozens of different ways and it wouldn't lose anything.

I suppose that should be the joy of it from the very beginning, what with the intentionally disorienting jumble of moments in the first episode, but still I couldn't help but feel like I was waiting for a click moment, like a moment where suddenly it all makes sense. It was more so just watching point A and point B and then waiting for them to connect. Like, for example, Isaac and Miria are shown as friends with Nice, with Nice even writing them a letter of gratitude. Then, before that, you see Nice tasked with killing them. Sure, it's nice to see how their relationship evolved, but I still felt like knowing that their fate was never in danger because of seeing them alive later really killed the excitement especially becausefor a good portion of the series you don't know that Isaac and Miria are immortal.I don't know. I could defend Lain until the cows came home. A lot of it would involve direct quotes and shots though. I really need to start an essay like that one autist said he was doing.
For now though, what I will say is there's one VERY clear plot for Lain that you should get then several layers of thematic meaning, narrative interpretation and narrative symbolism. If you can't even open up the first layer of the Russian doll that's pretty sad bruv
The fact that Lain has so much to it that it can be discussed with multiple opposing yet equally legitimate views is a testament to it.
But again. There is one guaranteed narrative that you should have picked up. Please rewatch it if you haven't already before posting about it again.

That depends. If it's your favourite regardless of the rest I'd say it's necessary and perhaps more representative than it appears.
On the other hand I get what you mean. I have split my nine three ways between three particularly specific facets of my taste. I try to keep it broad though so that things I really like aren't left out due to some representative arbitration.

What don't you understand about my criticism? I pointed out an example of something I thought was representative of the show's poor quality in my first post. Defend the infodump sections to begin with, and we can go from there. Please, tell me why you think that the interspersed narrated bullshit in ep 9 on Shumann resonance and whatnot was a great use of screentime. Tell me why you think that it was important and so great for the show to add that context there, and why you thought that what they did was the best method to do so.
