Top Ghibli animator Makiko Futaki just passed away at the age of 58. She was one of the best animators at the studio.

Animating is one of those things that requires energy, not skill.
In all honesty 58 is too old, you get too slow at that age. Like. She's not 'best' anything okay? She did something that doesn't require much individualism or skill

You have no idea what you're talking about. If it required no individualism or skill why do so few animators get to that level no matter how long or much they work?
>>
>>141601425
Animating requires both stamina AND skill. Also, if her work on Ponyo is any indication, she clearly was capable of churning out great work in her middle-age.

>Because who's counting?
People who work in animation. Animators for one keep track of each other and know when someone is producing good work. Directors and production assistant also need to know who who's capable to produce work at the level they want.

There also just non-professional fans of animators who have distinguished themselves. See the video linked in the OP. It exists because people knew who Futaki was and kept track of her work.

To many people this isn't some random name they first herd of with the news of her death.

>Because there's not much room for top positions since they're at the top.

You only get to the top by being noticed for your good work.

>Because the amount of time you spend on something isn't relative to what you're claiming
You're the one who claimed it required little skill to animate. So someone spending a lot of time should succeed at it no?

In what world? Certainly not in Japan. Japan uses an honor system. It's why Pokemon's characters are drawn by someone incapable of drawing human anatomy.

But you have to draw each new frame. The entire thing. Do even know how 2D animation even works? It's not like you just move what's already there like in 3D animation. You have to redraw the character with slight movement over and over for each frame unless you want it to look like shit. There's not as much skill involved in in-between as key animation, but you still need to be good at drawing.

You still need to understand perspective, 3d space, and motion. Whenever the character turns or the angle changes, you need to be able to draw it in correct perspective. Not to mention you must be able to draw confident, clean lines. How does that not require some kind of skill? Also, the key animators that generate the drawings for the in-betweeners don't have anything to trace off of. I can kind of understand why you say in-betweening doesn't require much drawing skill, but if a single person made a good looking animation sequence, surely that would require drawing skill. Have you seen Glen Keane's animations? I do agree that Japanese animation is indeed very stiff compared to western animation, but by saying animation requires no drawing skill, are you saying that for Western animation as well? Still though, if you think it's so easy, why don't you try doing it yourself from scratch? I assure you it's not easy and that it does require drawing ability.

>>141603651
Yes, but even with computer each frame is many times completely redrawn. if you just copy paste, it looks strange and not as if it's moving. Yes, computer makes it much easier, but it's not like you can copy paste everything and move it a little bit. There are some things you can copy-paste if there is little movement, but for the most part you cannot.

Your argument is literally that I said drawing or animation requires NO skill. Which I never said.
And you don't need to know angle changes as much as you make it out to be. A new scene is a new scene. Based on a new panel.
>confident clean lines
The eraser tool exists. You know.
>>
>>141604154
>Whenever the character turns or the angle changes, you need to be able to draw it in correct perspective
They use 3d model as reference. It's easy.

>Not to mention you must be able to draw confident, clean lines
Animators rarely draw clean lines.

>Also, the key animators that generate the drawings for the in-betweeners don't have anything to trace off of
They often trace model sheet.

Yeah because there isn't something as too much or unrealistic animation. Look at god eater, the animation was smooth but it had no weight and bubbly despite them having more than 7 months to produce 4 episodes.
>>
>>141604230
>Posts a picture of 3d animation
Yes, but you do say that animation requires no drawing skill don't you? And how would you not need to know angle changes in an action scene, a turning scene, or even a scene from an upwards/downwards angle? I'm not talking just about anime, but western animation as well. If animation did not require drawing skill it would not require education in drawing and figure study. Do you really think you can draw good lines just because you have an eraser tool? Do you draw at all? Have you ever animated?
