This is exactly the problem. It's a cheap attempt to "humanize" a character that there is little reason to care for. You'd have to have a pretty low level of emotional maturity to find his death sad. Which isn't surprising, when you look at the level of discussion in most HxH threads.

How do you mean? He's introduced as a character who follows what he's biologically programmed to do, but is also shown to re-think his motivations. He legitimately wants to do the right thing, his end goal is to erase inequality and create a world as fair as possible. He's also shown to be merciful and forgiving on top of that but there's a level of nuance to him as well, as yourself and even Netero pointed out.
If you believe a character has to be 100% good and literally Jesus to care about them i'd have to question your level of emotional maturity instead.
