Actually, Macross' biggest problem was the execs. "It's going to be 48 chapters; disregard that, lmao, it's going to be 27; that was a double-ruse, it's going to be 36 (when already 3 episodes had aired and many other chapters were already being worked on!)". They had to change plans many times because of that, and they had to outsource a lot of minutes worth of animation, and that's why some chapters look like shit. If they gave them time, a nice budget (the first episodes had a shitty one and still they manage to had some gorgeous scenes) and supported them, I'm sure that Studio Nue would've done a more coherent, polished product. I'm talking about both things. The writing suffered as well. That's why Hikaru and Misa are so close at chapter 27, then they regress back all of a sudden to the way they treated each other many episodes back, and their relationship is rebuilt again almost from start. At least on Hikaru's end, that thing he says about his personal life being personal to a woman that, even if he was too dense to consider a romantic interest, was a close friend nevertheless, is ridiculous. Two filler chapters had to be included. Also, some things feel dragged and reiterative, for instance Hikaru and Misa being butthurt about Minmay and Kaifun, that lasted like 3 episodes (I wonder if Kaifun would've been such a big deal if the series were supposed to end earlier at chapter 27). In fact, Kaifun becomes a useless character in the second half, there's no activism to make in a world already decimated by war and just trying to survive, he's just there complaining because he's Kaifun and he complains and to steal some minutes, because "we have to make 9 chapters out of this and we don't have a clue about how to fill time". Not to mention Claudia giving advice to Misa and Hikaru all over again, exactly as she did before.
The second part feels like the characters going through the motions just to keep the timer running, and only at the end they are "unfrozen" and resume where they were left. Don't get me wrong, I love many things of it, the way they show reconstruction in the decimated planet, the effects of war, the way some Zentraedis simply can't adapt to this new way of life, that glorious last chapter, etc. But for the most of time it shows that they had to wrap things up the best way they could given the circumstances, which would've been totally different if they planned everything for 36 episodes since the beginning.

Also, Minmay's VA wasn't that experienced and had a hard time acting scared so Misa's seiyuu, who had a lot of years in the business, slapped a glass of water off her hand and the surprise shocked her enough to scream. After that she didn't have as many problems.

I finally got around to watching Zero (had only seen ep1 back when it first got released and never watched the rest).. Rather enlightening and makes some parts of Frontier make a shit ton more sense now.
Gonna watch Flashback next and then I'll start watching 7 which I've not seen anything of to this day. I did however watch the OP last night just to see how the rip quality was and was rather surprised at how catchy it was.. Promising to say the least.
