Just curious, how popular is anime in the UK?

I don't know very many British anime fans and just wondering if its as popular there as say US, Australia, Canada, etc.

Also if you a an anime fan from the UK was are your favorites?
>>
>>141474391
You should just say London.

It's the only place that matters in the UK and the only place foreigners come to visit the UK for.

Also I'll just say one of my favourites is Shiki.

Never hear about it, everyone keeps to themselves for the most part.

Not very.
Presumably because there's no novelty in watching shows about weird-teethed, tea-drinking perverts because that's just normal.

Also I think American dubs end up turning people away.

Brit here, really doesn't seem to be that popular, there are a couple of narutards at uni but that's about it

Anime in the UK? We got people thinking that Urotsukidōji was representative of the medium.
>>
Animes a pretty World Wide thing as long as you have internet access. Which is how all of us are getting anime in the first place.
I mean I have no idea where you guys are from. Not everyone in this board is from America.
It's also pretty popular in places like Brazil
>>
I'd like to see an English dub that done by ACTUAL English people. Xenoblade seemed to prove that at least a decent idea.

Its not like American English is representative of the English language as a whole.

>>
We're too busy apologising for social situations that aren't our fault then going on in silence to openly have interests. Might be some anime fans out there but I'll never know.
>>
>>141475182
UK channels aimed at children aren't allowed to broadcast more mature content.
Everything has to be suitable for their primary audience no matter the time of day or night.

Plus, the UK subsidiaries seem to be run by monkeys.
>>
>>141475182
There is but they don't show anime.

Anime is pretty much only ever shown on UK in the early mornings, for kids. And it's pretty much Astro Boy and Pokemon and nothing else.
>>
>>141475368
also Yu-Gi-Oh!
>>
the Sci-fi channel used to air a lot of good stuff and CN tried to make a spin off anime channel but weren't interested in acquiring shows other than Cowboy bebop and outlaw star. There was a push to make anime more popular on cable and and sky around the mid 00's but it all failed miserably.
>>
>>141475368

Interesting. Since it's so famous and I've never seen it being broadcasted in Germany, I was curious whether it was in other countries.

Its really not. If anything, out of the big English speaking countries its probably the least popular in the UK.

I blame the UK animation market being killed in infancy by the U.S pinching all our fucking talent with fat Disney money and the BBC crancking out 1000+ Dramas and documentaries which just destroy the competition. Hence no homegrown animation (save for claymation but that's dead now as well) and no appetite for it. That and we have some retarded broadcast laws, so it would never get broadcast anyway.

Its a shame really.
>>
>>141475368
>and nothing else
You forgot that Film4 also shows Ghibli films every now and again as well.
>>
An anime channel existed in the Uk in the mid 00's!
I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.
It showed Cowboy Beebop, Wolfs rain, Outlaw star,GITS, FMA, Planetes and the first 20 episodes of Bleach.

I think I must have been the only person watching it because it disappeared after a year.

To be fair, that's not necessarily a bad thing considering the high quality of BBC documentaries in particular.

I'm from the UK and watch a lot of anime. Likewise I know a lot of people who also watch it and, while there's a slight stigma, people seem to be fairly open about it for the most part.

I like a lot of stuff, though my favourite anime series is probably Haikyu or Log Horizon.

It seems a lot of people around 23-25 seem to be secret weebs.

Not all that popular, anime never had a solid bedrock here as during the 90/80s British cartoons held strongly in the morning/afternoon slots.

Only anime that's broadcasted in the UK is on the channel Film4 and that's pretty much exclusively Studio Ghibli, thought I think Paprika has been played before.

The London-bubble is responsible for the vast, vast majority of problems including everything political (the Scottish independence referendum was largely motivated by anger at WM).

I've seen plenty of people who mention they like anime or manga here, I could walk into my local Waterstones and pick up a couple volumes or go down to my LCS however the medium doesn't seem as popular and still viewed as pretty weird by most mainstream people. Not as accepted as somewhere say like France, Spain, Canada, America, etc. Where those places are more used to it.

>What are your favourites?
I usually like older anime from the 70s and 80s, Leiji Matsumoto and Yoshiyuki Tomino are two of my favourite directors. Also Dezaki mostly for Rose of Versailles. I watch just about anything really.

As for manga I'm a fan of Drawn and Quarterly's manga selection and usually buy something from them once in a while since they've got a nice catalog of manga. Yoshihiro Tatsumi and Shigeru Miziku are two of my favourite artists, very sad to hear they passed away last year. Also like Jiro Taniguchi, Taiiyo Matsumoto, Junji Ito, Satoshi Kon and Osamu Tezuka.

>>141475182

We had our own Toonami back in the early 00s which showed some stuff like Bebop, Big O, Outlaw Star, DBZ, Tenchi, really quite based looking back on it. We used to have a good amount of anime shown on our screens but it's virtually forgotten now but we do have a channel called Sony movies which shows some anime series but they usually just stick to Bleach and Black Lagoon and show a couple movies like the Berserk trilogy and Roujin Z.

''Animation is for kids'' is still the collective conscience here and the industry itself outside of pre-school shows is more or less dead. If its not an american sitcom that isn't suited for minors, it won't get a second glance.

There was all sorts airing in the 90's and early 2000's on fox kids and toonami and I swear we had at least one dedicated channel for a short time on Sky, but not anymore.

Eh, anime has its place in London.

Living around the general area I can always tell when the MCM convention is happening because I can see anime cosplay on the Tube. Though it's all casual shit. Have previously seen

>Shingeki no Kyojin Scout Legionnaires
>Bleach shinigami
>Naruto
>Pikachu
>Junko Enoshima (at the time when Danganronpa in English only existed as a SA LP and fan translation)

Also some of the large bookstores have halfway decent manga shelves, and HMV tends to have anime shelf (usually half-filled with Ghibli but has also in the past included trash like Kampfer and Strike Witches and Nisemonogatari).

>Not as accepted as somewhere say like France, Spain, Canada, America, etc. Where those places are more used to it.

I've had the opposite experience. The lack of knowledge about it means most people are less prejudiced against it and will at least question it. Once they're told it's 'adult' animation they seem to be reasonably accepting. Obviously if it's got lolis on the front you've got an issue.

On a related note the UK might not have animation but there's a pretty major love of western animation here. The Simpsons, in particular, has been on Channel 4 nightly for fuck knows how long. Why this doesn't translate to anime I don't know. Likely the language barrier.

Funny you mention the Simpsons being on Channel 4 when they used to show Fist of the North Star on it years ago. Not so sure how popular it was when airing though. I wish they'd show more anime films outside of Ghibli but Film4 used to show Satoshi Kon's work if I recall, mostly Paprika but I can't remember if they showed his other films.

Generally I don't like Waterstones, but the Cambridge one is great. I got all of Biomega and some Sidonia from there. I figured Cambridge had high enough autist levels to warrant a large (ish) manga section.

Most the people I personally know who dig anime are black, which makes me laugh considering who racist the nips are.

My fave anime are NGE, GITS, Guyver, Angel Cop, Wicked City, SEL and pretty much any 80s/90s /cyb/ anime.

BBC is remaking A Midsummer Nights Dream,
Lets look at the changes.
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/7130863/BBC-Sex-Up-Shakespeare-Lesbian-kiss-and-racy-gay-romance-set-to-spice-up-the-Bard.html
>The re-write means that Theseus, King of Athens, dies of a heart attack instead of living which frees his bride Hippolyta, played by Eleanor Matsuura, to fall into the arms of fairy queen Titania, which whom she shares a sensual kiss.
>Theseus’s character is also rewritten to be that of a Nazi-style dictator, while Hippolyta-bizarrely-starts the drama wearing a Hannibal Lecter style mask and a strait jacket.
>The other storylines that have been switched around include Demetrius (Paapa Essiedu) falling in love temporarily with Hermia’s (Prisca Bakare) lover Lysander (Matthew Tennyson), while Flute (Fisayo Akinade) ends the play dressed as a woman on the arm of a handsome soldier.
>“It’s very male-female, male-female, so I wanted to have a man with a man, a man who was dressed as a woman with a man, and a woman with a woman
But why?
>because it’s 2016, so that’s the world now.
Current year, goyim, it's current year!
>“I wanted children to watch this and see the real world in the middle of this fantasy.”
Never too young to push your propaganda on kids.
I could list othyer articles, but this covered the most changes.

BBC are utter trash, everything the produce is biased as fuck. They are probably airing pro EU adverts as we speak.

>Where do you live? I'm generally interested to hear where all the UK based 4chan /pol/ racists grew up. I don't think anyone who grew up in a city would say this shit, it reeks of little englander from home counties stench.

Whilst I myself am not exactly /pol/ you are clearly a sheltered little shit if you think the countryside is all racist hicks or the cities all 'educated' urbanites.

Hell areas of Manchester were voting for the BNP as a result of the rape gang coverup. People know when this shit is going on. To deny that there is and was a coverup is to deny objective fact also.

Now of course this doesn't make all muslims rapists outside of the minds of a /pol/ack but still.

I don't see anime on BBC being a thing ,seems surreal when you think about it. I remember when they did some documentary with Jonathan Ross where he went to Japan and enjoyed it a lot, one scene I recall is when he browsed some hentai on his phone. Pretty funny. I'd love to see him and Louis Theroux do a joint anime and manga documentary. Would need to be in similar style to his Weird Weekends.

>>141477194

Now I definitely remember seeing something along those lines, except they showed an advert for Fate and Hunter x Hunter on Crunchy Roll I believe.

I think any UK fag can agree that watching anime is seen as taboo here. There's little to no publicity, cons or merchandise outside 10 or 12 dvd box sets at a local HMV or piss storeCEX. Even those who discuss anime in public are cautious about it and that usually only takes place in college/uni and stops at age 23. Like I said before, anime is popular here, but it's almost so hidden from our shitty chav-culture that it's invisible from society.

London is a weird place, it both encapsulates huge stereotypes about the UK but represents so little of it. Maybe it's national pride but I'd say London and New York are easily the two most important cities in the world. With that in mind it's understandable why so many tourists go there.

Anime wise though, Planetes is my fav. Also in Universities there's always a anime clubs and stuff. Even in my small town there is a comicbook/ anime shop, it's alright.

Anime Central was great. Think it was back in 2006, 2007.

Got me into a lot of great anime. Got to watch Ghost in the Shell SAC, Planetes, Wolf's Rain, .hack//Sign, Escaflowne. Even got to rewatch stuff like Fullmetal Alchemist, the early Bleach episodes and Cowboy Bebop.

Was quite gutted when the plug got pulled. I live in quite a rural area so my internet connection was dog shit, couldn't really stream as much as I wanted.

Maybe another channel will come along, who knows. I think with stuff like Netflix and online streaming there isn't really a need for that kind of thing though.

The problem with Anime in Britian is the fact not many people know about it here. Around 6 years ago when I showed an anime (think it was bleach) to people at school they thought it was pokemon and I was childish for watching this kind of thing. From my experience most brits think any anime is for kids because of the crap we get on Cartoon Network. In recent years however it has become more known as several retailers are now selling manga volumes and anime DVD/BDs. As well as several anime conventions in London every year.

I cant say I lack ambition, just no qualifications and I cant get experience becuase they will only take me on if I have experience. The one time I see jobs that are ignoring these factors, and they include being able to drive. Fuck cars, stupid overpriced trash. Cars arent too bad to be fair, it's just the insurance that comes along with it that makes it too expensive for me to drive.

Thats why my eyes are on England. I dont want a longterm job of factory stuff, but my goal is to get a factory job for a few montsh, enough to cover the cost of driving and then I have more options.

>The Welsh are too preoccupied with sheep, rugby, beer and sheep to watch Chinese girl cartoons, apparently.

There's probably a large untapped market for sheep-loli anime in Wales.

I don't even try to meet up or talk to people about anime, so I can't really say what the general opinion is it in London. Seems there are quite a few anons here who have a better idea than me though. For manga, I either rely on Amazon to deliver it or see what I come across in Forbidden Planet, near Tottenham Court Road station.

My favourite anime is Rozen Maiden

South Wales is best Wales.
I dont really care about rugby outside of six nations.
As for alcohol I'm more of a spirits guy, drink less and get drunk quicker.

To be fair Welsh women arent particularly great. Some look godly, but I see a lot of sluts and chavs.
Atleast it's whiter than England.

Are Japanese tourists autistic?
Because I saw an English tourist once, and he was taking a picture of a drain.
I didnt understand and felt it would be awkward to ask.

>Going through the licensing upgrade agreement forms, BLL-43s, viewing background checks and then gaining your Advanced TV license after not having your regular TV license for 2 months just to watch cute girls doing cute things.
Worst part is the £50 processing fees, and the £100 extra on monthly payments because of it.
