Haven't watched but up to date LN / WN & manga. MC is the epitome of average guy but puts forth his own personal style of positive attitude.
MC isn't typical since his method of taking each day on repeat follows his own sense of intuition and logic. The guy makes bad choices, has a flew flaws, and that shit gets tested, when he eventually breaks he manages to rebuild himself, with a few parts missing / scarred.

My previous post was too long, but I should clarify that I actually like his character
and find him relatively well-written.
But he's not an enjoyable character, and I can definitely see how it turns people off.
When he was asking for something, the situation was similar to blackmail.
So, it's not like he could ask for much without hurting his relationships or making them weird.
He obviously values his relationships quite a bit, so he's definitely playing at the long game,
which is why he did as he did.
Admittedly, there were probably better choices there, but what he asked for were relatively natural given the progression of events.
You mentioned that he was disgusting, and I assumed you meant from the perspective of the viewers.
But when Subaru called himself disgusting, this was in reference to his inferiority and self-hatred,
where he acts in artificial or um-seemingly manner, which he find disgusting.
But when a viewer calls a character disgusting, it's not in this sense:
It's because the character is acting against our norms.
Subaru's only real fault there would be his willingness to do embarrassing actions;
in any case, this isn't a generic type of disgust for anime.
Yeah, he's kind of dumb, and that can be aggravating.
I don't think that's going to change, so that's going to be a constant source of annoyance.
I think the alternative is no better.
Imagine that Subaru takes on a calculating stance.
At that moment the story loses much of it's pathos because then each failure becomes more strategic in nature as Subaru is no longer emotionally suffering from them.
Subaru has essentially become an invincible protagonist,
and the story has become an obvious power fantasy.
You might like that story more, but it's a different story;
and probably, not the one the author wants to tell.
It would be a typical "dark" isekai story: bad stuff happens then MC recovers and becomes overpowered.

I find self-loathing, insecurity, and victim complexes(which may be justified but fuck) annoying too.
I was talking about the whining and loss of rationality/ambition each and everytime he dies.
I mean I can understand the loss of morale, but he'll cave into learned helplessness if he can't savescum before an event or beat a tough enemy in a few tries.
Storywise this chain of events is written well, bringing in dynamics like "Hollowing" from Dark Souls where humanity is lost and things become more difficult(Witch scent/Sanity) and eventually he'll lose DETERMINATION. But if he worked on his strengths constantly instead of lamenting the story would be different.
TL;DR he starts out as a tenacious "I can rule the world" MC after the first one or two times he returns to a new bonfire, gets the brakes beat off of him and goes into despair MC for a VERY long time rinse and repeat
But I understand the author's goal is apparently suffering, so an MC easily affected by trauma may be necessary
