welp looks like I have to do this
just wen through 10 completely different uploads of the same scene, 9 from youtube and 1 from dailymotion

Without exception, only 2 were original encodes, or at least not blatant low bitrate recodes.

https://www.youtube.com/user/Dh4m13l/videos is the highest quality, but it's downright incomplete.

http://www.dailymotion.com/playlist/x1s0bw_Va-Pisoth_let-s-learn-japanese-vol-1/1#video=xm68p6 is where the remaining 8 uploads got their source material from. It's compressed differently than the above link, giving less blocking, but giving more ringing.

I'm going to be batch downloading the dailymotion playlist, then uploading it to mega.

It's just a plain four-character compound - not streamlined enough to really imply a common occurrence. Now, if it were some compacted two-character compound with Chinese-style ordering, something like 衝車, that's the point where I'd think twice about setting foot in Japan. If it were a word made up of a single kokuji, I'd log into my investment account and make sure I'm not holding stock in any Japanese companies.

For newcomers, if in doubt, use the guide's advice as a fallback if you're genuinely not sure if it's "shitpost advice" or not.

For future reference (on how to tell if something is a shitpost):
>calls the community made guide/whatever method a piece of shit with no reasoning given why
>insults someone giving helpful advice with no reasoning given why
>attempts to create arguments over virtually nothing (eg opinions without facts -> x is better than y!!!)
>uses obtuse Japanese fragments interspersed with English to attempt bypass people trying to filter the shitposts
>any mention of anime being shit, or "real Japanese"
>spells it as romanji
It's pretty easy to tell at this point.

Why is it a bad idea to use romaji?
Do I really have to learn BOTH hiragana and katakana? I heard katakana wasn't used much.

For starters:
http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/writing

>there are multiple versions of systems trying to romanize Japanese, none are exactly the same

The word Rōmaji itself should be a big hint. That - above the o indicates a long vowel sound, but if you don't know the kana in words like that, it can be confusing how to ACTUALLY spell it. For words like 大きい - is it Oki? Ookii? Ôkî? Ōkī? Another problem with this ambiguity is that ji / di / chi / zu / dzu / du will confuse you, because they're not consistent at all. And yes, some words REQUIRE you to make the distinction.

Then we get into the homophones, without kanji you would have a hard time keeping all the kaerus apart. Hashi can be both bridge and chopsticks. Hell, even if you learned just the kana, reading kana alone is typically really difficult without kanji to help aid in context.

Authors will also change the "usual" way of writing something down at random - they use katakana on certain words for emphasis (similar to how English uses italics), or to help break up a long block of hiragana, making it easier to learn. What if an ESL told you they could only read lower case letters because they never bothered to learn the capitals? It doesn't make sense.

Don't use romaji as a crutch, it very well could create problems in the long run. There is a world of resources out there and you're limiting yourself from using some of the better ones if you don't learn to read properly in the first place; you're not -really- getting ahead like you think you are.
>>
>>141424678
>I heard katakana wasn't used much.
It's not used much...relative to hiragana and kanji. It still shows up in nearly every sentence, retard.

Not everyone reads scifi and fantasy shit all the time, kiddo, that are full of basically English words in katakana.
In a real novel for adults, you can often go hundreds of pages before you see a foreign word written in kanas.
>>
>>141424775
Read any news site, internet forum or basic conversational exchange between Japanese people and see how far you get without katakana.

>Which order should I learn the Kanji in?
>I heard Japanese kids only do x amount per YEAR, so how can we learn so much all at once?

Japanese kids learn the 'most useful' kanji first, not the simplest one. For instance, compare these five kanji 叱 泊 雨 雲 曜. It seems rather obvious that the first two are simple. Indeed they don't have many strokes, and they're easy to remember. On the other hand, the last three, especially the third seems harder to remember and draw.

Now compare the approximate meaning of each : to scold, to stay overnight, rain, cloud, day of the week. While being easier to retain, the first two kanji relate to more complex ideas than the last three. Just look at the kanji for day of the week (○曜日), it really doesn't seem easy to write/remember. The complexity of a kanji doesn't necessarily relate to the idea behind it.

Yet, if you follow the way Japanese kids learn kanji, you'll learn 曜 way before 叱. But for kids, it's rather logical since they know what both words are, they only need kanji to write/read them. As an adult learning Japanese, you DON'T already know the words. However, being older, you posess abstract thinking abilities and therefore can use methods other than brute force repetition. This leads to far greater efficiency and far less frustration.

In conclusion, learning each kanji individually the way Japanese kids do it isn't a great idea overall. If you want to study kanji, either do it through Core / some form of vocabulary study, or go for a logical step progression method, like RTK, Kanji Damage or Kodansha's Learner Course.

>Daily Japanese Thread DJT #1538

I'd like to remind everyone here on /a/ who hates generals that DJT's # is not inaccurate. DJT was literally one of the first generals to appear on /a/, even before generals were a thing. The desire to discuss a given subject over a long period of time in a central location -- this desire is what has made 4chan's love of generals today.

Is it good, or is it bad?

I'll let you be the judge of that.

And by the way, I was here on /a/ both before the DJTs started and during thread #1. Everyone hated the DJTs at first, and they were saged, spammed, reviled, and even moderated. Eventually, after an overwhelming consensus by a small few who would not stop posting it, everyone gave up.

And here we stand today, not only are the DJTs allowed, they are encouraged, and the exact opposite has come to fruition: Even though DJTs have nothing to do with /a/, you stand the risk of being banned if you stand out against them.

I'd consider them a problem if they were like other generals on /a/.

But outside of ironic "ankifu" posting, there's none of the waifu wars, autism, or fetishism that other generals experience as their fandoms begin to stagnate with ded series. There's still shitposting of course, but I don't think it's possible to escape from that no matter where you go on 4chan.

To be completely blunt, I honestly think that /djt/ covers one of the few subjects on this board that's relatively immune to that.

I was here shitposting the threads on day one, dude. The completely clueless idea of learning 5 kanji a day through RTK, it was laughable.

But after a few days I got bored, and then I came back a year or two later to find that the threads were no longer retarded crap parroted by people without a clue, but were reasonably competent and had the occasional bit of advice if you weren't posting like a complete retard.

But, like anything good, shitposters had to move in because I guess they get mad when anyone is actually trying to improve or a thread is relatively drama-free.

No mate, you're just legit stupid.

>The more accidents the more it gets reported the earlier it would be in core.
The occurrences of the word isn't indicative of the statistics of traffic accidents, you dumb fuck. A single article about a car crash can have dozens of usages of the word, even more if it is referencing another accident. You are fucking dumb, mate. When was the last time you read a newspaper? Things tend to get repeated, a lot.

Fuck off with your "muh autism" response. It has not become the stock "u 2" response by every braindead fucker who says something stupid and ends up being ridiculed for it.

>I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not the same guy but just throwing in your opinion, which I suppose isn't wrong, just misplaced.

>>
>>141427932
I'm not him.

It's not common day to day vocab, but it is extremely common in newspapers anywhere in the world, hence it appears in core early (which is based on newspaper vocab). That doesn't mean accidents happen often. Japan is a pretty safe country.

>this desire is what has made 4chan's love of generals today.
There is a reason why prior to 2007 and the second eternal september, that shit like generals would not have come to light.
The reason why generals exist now is that during 2007 and 2008, 4chan was absolutely fucking devastated by the flood out normalfags who came in here like a zerg rush wanting to see the hip new "edgy" site that was all over the news.

>And here we stand today, not only are the DJTs allowed, they are encouraged
No. Mods gave up and the redditor continued to make the thread, then when he fucked of the autists who had made this place their home, were compelled to keep it going out of routine. The only reason why mods haven't removed generals is that they are too lazy to deal with the backlash that always happens every time they take against against the whim of the insufferable manchildren who have colonised this site. There are too many of them and too few mods to fight the tide.

>Even though DJTs have nothing to do with /a/, you stand the risk of being banned if you stand out against them.
Mods don't give a shit about this thread. You're sooner able to spam CP in here and get away with it than on the rest of /a/. Don't take lack of care as moral support. Mods don't want you here, neither does the rest of the site. The only people who want to defend generals are the cancerous spergs who have locked themselves away in them 24/7, keeping each thread alive as long as possible regardless of lack of discussion.
You're lucky Hiro cares more about getting data than what m00t cared about because while m00t was a lazy incompetent prick, Hiro knows how to run these sites and has had great financial success with them. If Hiro hated the concept of generals on 4chan as much as m00t did, these threads and every other general on /a/ would be gone, so consider yourself lucky for the moment that mods are too fucking lazy to act and that admin doesn't give a shit.

You are cancer.

The word is still in use, though not common. Comparing WWWJDIC frequency counts:
妻: 295k
奥さん: 132k
奥様/奥さま: 58k

WWWJDIC doesn't even flag it as sensitive.

Either way, this word is worth including in a core list unless you you take your SJW'ing so seriously that that you'd intentionally leave it out in an attempt to "reform" the Japanese language by depriving gaijin students of the ability to understand words that you consider non-PC.

From the Anki startup guide:
>Some people like doing new cards separate from reviews since it makes both easier and lets you focus on them individually. If you want to do this, just set new cards per day to 0 before doing reviews, do your reviews, then set new cards to however many new cards you want to do that day.
This is bullshit. I started doing this a few days ago and my retention of new cards has dropped like a rock. Interspersing your new cards among your young and mature cards is much easier since you can tackle them one at a time that way instead of having to face a huge chunk of new words one after the other.
>>
Do you guys do sentences in Anki too? So far I'm only doing vocab recognition in it, and was wondering if I should add sentences or just get my practice reading actual material.
>>
>The character for stop is easiest to learn as a pictograph, though you have to take a moment to see it. Take it as a rather crude drawing of a footprint: the first 3 strokes represent the front of the foot and the last the heel. The big toe (stroke 2 sticking out to the right) on the right indicates that this is a left foot.
Okay, so it's a footprint. How does that relate to stopping?

If you're going to do sentences at all, then you'd better do them in Anki. With apps that actually check your answers, your reps will turn into living hell as you acquire vocab and style.

That said, sentences are a problem because you end up basing your answers on stuff like the layout of the words on the card, thus acquiring and strengthening knowledge that's literally useless outside of Anki.
>>
>>141433747
>If you're going to do sentences at all, then you'd better do them in Anki.
wrong, you use supermemo for sentences
>>
>>141434207
This is the first time i've heard about supermemo. Can you explain why it's better than anki for sentences?
>>
>>141434330
the tldr is that it was designed while being conscious of things that don't fall into the ideal "keyword, definition" flashcard format, including passages of text

anki is just a fixed up clone of a really old supermemo version, and it's great for things that are actually reasonable to memorize
>>
>>141434410
Then wouldn't it suffer from the same problem as Anki?

At least for me, having a proper sentence as the question makes me memorize all the wrong things - nailing the answer based on the length, some words in the beginning and other irrelevant cues. Even if I make a conscious effort to read the text, it's already ogre by that time since I know the answer.

I don't see a way around this - even if you play around with the fonts, you can still nail the sentence after the first few words, like slapping a karuta card with only a few syllables having been uttered.
>>
>>141434674
>Then wouldn't it suffer from the same problem as Anki?
it suffers from the same fundamental problems like you listed, but it's very different from anki at this point so it'll have fewer scheduling related problems

for example supermemo lets you soft-lapse cards instead of having to explicitly choose a single lapse interval modifier for your entire deck

What's the difference between 減らす and 減る btw? They have the exact same backside and are both just 'verbs' in anki
>>
>>141436166
First is transitive, second is intransitive.

http://www.imabi.net/l50transitivity.htm
>>
>>141436166
減らす is transitive
I decreased the amount of dicks in my mouth (you acted upon the object)

減る is intransitive
The amount of dicks in my mouth decreased (something happened to the object on it's own)

You can generally tell the difference between transitive / intransitive pairs because the transitive one usually ends with す (回る、回す etc)

Google it for more information, it took me a decade to understand transitivity shit even though it's piss easy
>>
>>141436310
す-verbs are the most regular verbs in all of japanese
ichidan verbs have causative/passive ambiguity and all other godan verbs do weird shit in front of the past tense
す verbs are perfect. す verbs are standard.

死にます
死んだ
出します
出した

etc
>>
>>141436296
>>141436310
I think your explanation made it click for me. Basically, the -su guys are used when it's someone doing something, and the other is used when it happens by itself.
>>
>>141436310
>>141436412
As a quick follow up, in the intransitive one anki uses this example sentence:

次の駅で降ります。

But isn't this the transitive use of it? If not, why not?
>>
>>141436412
Yes.

"someone opened the window" vs. "the window opened"

It can be kind of difficult to get used to since, as you can see from the above example, a lot of verbs (maybe all of them?) in English can be transitive AND intransitive depending on how you use them.
>>
>>141436412
Yeah pretty much, but they don't always end with す that's just sort of a general rule, you can also tell which is which by whether が or を is used with it but that also depends on what kind of verb it is and shit
>>
>>141436565
Nothing's being acted on, the train's just going to the next station on it's own, so it's intrans, if the focus was the train driver then you could have it transitive I guess

Yes, I was doing 12 words per day for the last few months to keep the number of repeats approximately constant. Keep in mind that I was studying with kana keys which makes it much harder to remember which word it is. For example there were 3 words for こうてい and I had to recall all of them.

I joined in Jap class a year late when I was in secondary school and one of the lad that did it went on to choose to do a 4yr Bachelor in Jap in DCU (Dublin college in Ireland) with an erasmus to Japanland in the 3rd year. Even has a Nip gf now from looking at his fb and I bet he's completely fluent in it by now, living the dream in Japan and everything.

It's even worse for me doing a degree because I'm a poorfag and decided to cheap out by staying in my hometown doing a useless shitty degree.

I guess you're all right though, NEET's like ourselves won't last through 4yrs of hell again before commiting seppuku.
