Meruem was a concept. The supreme king, inheriting all the skills. He was meant to rule on both human world and the dark continent. Thanks to his retarded mother, he started by eating humans, so he didn't get that much power fast. Would have been something else on the Dark Continent.
Which troubles me more is that he has properties of the training line, acquiring skills of other people to become stronger. But he also have the behaviors of the natural skill line (strong anger, deep aura, intimidating).
So the kind is weird to define, because he's not exactly like the natural skill line (focused on one polyvalent power that they manage very well).
I think that's because the king is the end of the duality lines, the dark side of them. But I doubt we already know his true antagonist. Tha ants were just an introduction to the dark continent, and pito is just feeling that gon might reach him. My bet is that some amazing dude exist on the Dark Continent, probably a Freecess, using a polyvalent unique power, and strong as fuck. That's probably him the real antagonist of meruem (ant arc is just an intro to the real arc, the dark continent).
