Narration in the manga is a small text box here and there, it's quick to read and adds to the scene, but when it's read aloud it becomes annoyingly conspicuous and lengthy. I think he ran away from home because he didn't want to be an assassin and his family wouldn't let him have friends or anything. The abuse thing doesn't seem to bother him anymore. They have a really weird relationship with each other. Illumi's care for Kil is just one example. I think Silva is the only one he's okay with just talking to, but even then Kil doesn't fully trust him.
