Gyro also mentions that he never shot first and always waited for the opponent to shoot before he'd pull the trigger himself. (He didn't just recklessly slaughtered people)
Basically "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger", he wanted to improve by pushing himself to the limit repeatedly.
Also I guess the conformist part is because he gave in to emotions instead of staying rational and getting closer before throwing the ball.

How do you guys deal with Jotaro being such a marysue in the 1st universe? First he gets Dio's stand, then he gets a requiem to kill Dio's son and THEN he gets Jonathan's stand from the bone, Wonderful World to create a new universe. I can't see how JoJo kept going with such hamfisted writing.
