Animation has rupes about drawing what people associate with a concept whenever possible. For example, for a long time after flatscreen was normal, people would still think of the bulky crt screens in their minds when they heard the word tv, so animators animated that, I don't remember the justification for this logic, I just remember it's a thing.

OP, those flip phones ARE smartphones. Japan is where everyone basically lives on their phone, of course they have the latest phone technology. Just because it doesn't look like your iPhone doesn't mean it's not a smartphone. They were prevalent in Japan years before they exploded in the west.

Because it aired years ago and it's based off an LN from even further back as is the case with alot of Anime. Some studios choose to update it though.
Anyway the reason people still use flip phones is because; they like normal sized buttons and hate smudging screens (Also alot of people can't get touch screens to work reliably (something about their bodies constitution)), longer battery life, they don't need the stupid shit smart phones include they just want to make calls, google something now and again as well as use google maps in an emergency, also less bulky and more durable (You can drop them with it becoming unusable).

The flip phones keyboard is more convenient for typing japanese characters fast. See : left.
Whereas the rest of the world can have the entire keyboard on the screen, that's not really possible for japanese alphabets. So for them it's the same layout as on flipphones except now you can mistakenly press another key because they're not real buttons and are close to each other.

Because they have displacement taxing, anything above 2.0L of displacement gets the gas-guzzler tax, and most decent western cars are far above the 2.0L since muricans still believe there is no replacement for displacement so their cars are usually over 2.0, most popular cars in murica are over 3.0L in displacement
