The worst that ever happened to me was when I attended an international school overseas in 3rd grade where two 5th grade Polish kids pushed me into a bathroom stall and held the door shut for 10 seconds before they ran off. It's always difficult and concerning when deaths or other traumatising events don't seem to have much of an effect on us, but the most formative memories we have are almost always just random little asides that happened to have a profound impact. In my case I had to come to terms with the fact that just because the death of someone close to me didn't affect me as much as I expected doesn't mean I didn't care about them or that it didn't affect me. For some reason I was REALLY good at talking people into doing terrible things when I was a kid. Even the well adjusted kids who never bullied anyone would end up going along with my shitty ideas, mostly because I'd keep telling them it was all just a bit of fun and that if they didn't people would think they were boring. Never anything outright threatening, just suggestion. And I never got in trouble for it and no one ever called me out on it. I never had to do any actual bullying myself. My cousin had that happen to him too. My uncle and a few of his 'friends' decided to meet those kids after school and give them a talking to. They didn't show up to school for a few weeks and when they did they and their parents were scared shitless of ever doing anything to my cousin again. Having relatives in the mob is fucking ace.
Somehow I went to public schools with mostly poor urbanite black people and never really saw anyone give anybody shit, just the occasional fight where catfights outnumbered two guys fighting by about 3:1. And those were just in middle school, high school was 100% smooth sailing.
