Berserk is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive edge faggotry and DARKNESS. I just don't care about some little girl who sacrificed her abusive parents to become an apostle, or about the plight of some prostitutes in a refugee camp, and that Mozgus dude was annoying as hell.
Honestly the whole arc should have been: Farnese and her knights attempt to capture Guts and fail miserably, the eggman apostle finds Casca's baby, Griffith is reborn in human form, the end. The whole arc could have been done in one Volume of the manga.

Cheesecake Guts would ruin the dark realism of Berserk and its themes of gender inequality. Her childhood rape wouldn't have been as impactful because raping women is so status quo for Berserk. Casca's significance as a strong female mercenary would also be diminished. For the genre of realistic medieval golden age berserk is top tier. For the fantasy horror/grim dark berserk does it better then any.
Overall berserk has influenced a fuck ton of great manga out there and is one of the greatest mangas out there. It has withstood the test of time. Then again there's no end in sight and there is the chance it will remain unfinished, but if it does come to an end That's when we can definitively say whether it is the greatest. I honestly don't see how we can get a satisfying conclusion right now, but I have faith in 20 years we'll have some awesome developments

This is a pretty apt reply. Berserk for me just stands out in my mind. It's one of the few mangas I think could capture the appeal to a larger audience. The whole Byronic hero thing, the struggle and brutality of it. It's got a lot going on without it trying to be super "deep" and has a way of sticking inside your head. I got a few people to watch/read it and they couldn't get over the whole eclipse. It stuck with them for days/weeks after. It probably can't be classified as the best manga ever made, but it can be classed as one of the best. It's influence can be felt across a number of genres (the dark souls games, various other anime/manga).

The troll arc is just one battle in a much bigger story arc. Most of the Falcon of The Millennium arc is basically a remake of the Golden Age arc:
-Guts makes new friends.
-Griffith fights a war against the enemies of Midland.
-Griffith wins the war and is once again seen as a hero.
To call the troll battle "shit" is to miss the point of this arc. EVERYTHING good done by Guts and co in this arc (saving those villagers from the trolls, saving the city of Viritanis from Ganishka) is fucked up in the end by Griffith (when the worlds merge). Sounds a lot like what happened in the end of the Golden Age arc. THAT is the point.
No matter where Guts goes or what he does, he gets screwed over by Griffith in the end. And I expect the Fantasia arc to end the same way.

Zodd was definitely a highlight of the golden age and desu the wyald fight kinda dragged. It was necessary in the sense that it gave Guts the ability to beat apostles and him surviving the eclipse doesn't seem farfetched, but the best part about it was zodd swooping in and ripping him in half.
The rosine arc is probably guts' best fight, and refined his blackswordsman persona where he wasn't just a brooding edgelord but was characterized perfectly. Puck also was the perfect balance between being a caricature and a regular character at that point.
I do agree that the eclipse was the absolute peak of the manga.
