Are there any good Gundam series at all? I watched a few stand alone series knowing that they're considered bad and they were. Then I watched 0079, but it was bad too. I don't want to sit through hundreds of episodes of shit to chronologically arrive at a good series, but there must be SOME reason for the ongoing popularity of the franchise.

First, no matter what /m/ says, there's only one true Gundam canon, and that is UC spanning the life of Amuro and Char. Everything else is non-canon fanfiction.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam is great, as is most Gundam done in the 80's. For the '90s you have 0083. This is really when good Gundam ends.
There are other series with "Gundam" in it that are fun, like G Gundam, but I consider things like this (or Turn A, SD Force/Build Fighters) as parodies. Anything that tries to imitate the ideas of the original has failed. Any new installments in UC are bad.
"Gundam" is a finished product. It was finished over two decades ago.

This. The backstories of the main characters were conveyed very well through the flashbacks.
It honestly started off with me feeling like the roles had been reversed. The pilot of the Gundam was some dick hole ace pilot with some kind of twisted family connections, while the Souped-up Zaku Custom pilot was a downtrodden young man who'd personally lost friends to the Feddy pilot and had his own legs blown off in military service.
The more the series goes on, though, the more it becomes clear that these two very different people have a great deal in common, and that neither of their sides are necessarily the correct side. It's a very engaging story with some strong themes. I wish we could have more anime like this in general, to say nothing of Mecha.
Thunderbolt was great to me because the mecha were the least important part of the story. It was the people in the mecha that were important.
Personally, I'm glad Thunderbolt OVA ended with Psyco VS FAG showdown

Actually, that wasn't just for the thunderbolt sector. All the designs in thunderbolt (At least the space designs) are like that. Stuff like the GM in thunderbolt is literally just a nromal GM in that setting. Same with the Zaku, Gelgoog, etc.

If it were to my high standards, SEED. As much as it plagiarized 0079, the fact that it did actually made it good, plus the songs.
The thing is about everything else post-SEED apart from Destiny, they're all good with some major flaw holding them back (00 was too character driven, AGE was childish, BF and BFT were just too formulaic and the direction in Reconquista in G was a bit of a clusterfuck).

Origin isn't over yet so you can't really judge.
IBO had some pretty interesting stuff going on, and Mika and McGillis were great characters, but the only decent female character was Carta, and that's only because of how her story ended. All of the main cast female characters were garbage. The middle part of the show was awful in general. The most wasted potential since AGE. Hope they get a different writer for season 2 and try to salvage it.
G-Reco was great but you can't talk about it on /a/ because it makes casual mecha fans who love entry level stuff like IBO and AZ butthurt because real mecha fans made fun of them for not being able to follow a Tomino anime. Hell, you can't even get away from those shitters in unrelated threads either, just look at them constantly shitting up Delta threads.

Nope.Part of the Origin flashbacks is Professor minovsky attempting to defect to the EF. Zeon catches wind of this and sends a squad of 4 MS (Ral, Char, and two of the three tri-stars) to intercept him before the EF can pick him up. The EF meanwhile has been developing the guncannon in response to reports of zeon making a new MS, which thanks to AE taking over the project is a shoddy PoS not really built for ms on ms combat and made on a budget. The EF sends like a dozen newly made guncannons to protect professor minovsky. They get completely massacred. Like, it isn't even a fair contest how badly they get beat. Tem Ray uses the incident to get support for his Project V, which in origin is specifically to build just the gundam, free of AE input.

Imagine it's 2014. You're an average casual mecha fan who has seen TTGL, Code Geass, NGE, maybe a couple of AU/OVA Gundams, that sort of stuff, but nothing more. You've heard of Tomino and you've heard of UC Gundam, but you've never actually seen any of that stuff since it's so old and there's so much of it. You know they're considered classics so you're excited to watch a new anime made by the man who made these classics. He hasn't made a single Gundam since Turn A in 1999, and you always see people praising Turn A in Gundam threads so this new anime of his should also be great, right?
Then G-Reco comes out and it's completely different from what you expected it to be. Then you, and other people like you, start wondering what the hell is going on, and people who are actually familiar with how Tomino works start making fun of you. So you start getting angry, and the more you get angry, the more they make fun of you. Eventually it escalates to a point where it's literally impossible to mention G-Reco at all.
I thought things would calm down by now and people would move on, but apparently one guy is still butthurt /m/ made fun of him so ever since IBO ended he's been spamming and samefagging every chance he gets about how terrible G-Reco and /m/ are.

0080 is the only one I'd recommend to someone not into Gundam. Opens with an okay explanation on what's going on, sets up the situation well enough and I actually found the little kids romanticism with war and soldiers very easy to relate to.
