That is not how the Japanese anime/manga industry works. You do not shit talk your peers if you hope to continue your career. Especially since the director was some kind of big shot. And rarely do mangaka´s have any say in how the anime will turn out. Unless you wrote some really popular series like One Piece, most get zero respect for their input. He had to pretty much roll over. I will just say he was unlucky that the director was a real fucking ass. The interview I read, you can see how much the director went on and on about creating something he think solely lacked in the manga, and had a boner of putting his own mark on Aku no Hana. I think it was mainly because the old formula was still loved, and was hardly worn out. So many classes that still could have been shown, so many interesting challenges, clubs and time for side characters to develop. Instead we got such a high power boost for the antagonist (and a real cartoon antagonist like a normal battle manga), that most side characters got either blown out of relevancy, or leveled to match the weakest chief goons. I mean fucking Ryou, one of the finalist of autumn selection could barely scrap by a win against no name low key "evil" chief. While the rest is so useless, they do not even show up for more than a page (Meat). Oh and main girl got turned to damsel in distress.

that's not the problem with chinese marital arts, the problem is that their specific predictive techniques are things developed in a cultural bubble. It has been centuries and centuries of styles developed specifically to counteract the techniques of that one rival style down the road. They work in the specific context they were meant to work in, but because of the traditionalist culture inherent to it most never incorporated adapting to foreign or more modern fighting styles. If they weren't so opposed to change most styles have a solid enough core that they could be adapted to things like MMA just fine, and in fact quite a few have. But another issue is that they also aren't generally practiced as a professional athelete kind of thing the way it is in other countries. There has never been a culture or industry around living a life style of just competative chinese martial arts balanced with bulking and fitness. Most people in sport fighting actually have mediocre technique at best but they compensate for that with raw strength, and that's not to hand wave the effort, it's a valid tactic. There's a certain threshold in things like fight sports where investment into fighting technique really just stops paying off. You can basically just be big enough and have a working FOOS to get by and you'll only have to worry about guys bigger than you.
