It's pretty much as impossible as it gets. Sure, the laws of physics don't disallow it, but it's pretty much the typewriters and monkeys thing again. My point is that just because it's going to end well because of plot armor doesn't mean that you should expect rational people with limited time horizons - that don't know how the story is going to end - to be accepting/tolerant/enthusiastic about people doing otherwise illogical things.

Like I said, that's a critique from hindsight. You know how it's going to end and what needs to be done to stop it, that's our privilege as an audience.

If you were actually in that situation would you be like yeah, sure captain go take a ship and go out there alone through the hail of bullets so you can try to hug their captain and work things out.

And again, what is your point? Sometimes, the only thing that will work is the seemingly-illogical path, especially in stories. She did her best to make sure her crew wouldn't be in danger, then took all of the responsibility for her personal situation with Moka onto herself; her crew are right to be concerned, but neither you nor I are members of her crew. It seems that by your analysis she's damned if she does, damned if she doesn't.

>She did her best to make sure her crew wouldn't be in danger
No, since that would require her staying on the ship.

>then took all of the responsibility for her personal situation with Moka onto herself
Which is not what she should be doing, as she is the captain of the ship she shouldn't forsake the matters of the ship to chase after her own personal matters. She has a responsibility and by leaving the ship in dark times she's shirking her duties.

My point, again, is basically that the end doesn't justify the means. Yes she is doing the right thing in HINDSIGHT (which is afforded to us as the audience/spectators of the story), but it is not the right thing to be doing in the situation.

Let me make an example if you're having a hard time understanding what I'm saying.

Let's say that baby Hitler is vulnerable in his crib, and his nurse-chan can save millions of lives in the future by suffocating him to death (again, this is in hindsight). However would this be the right thing to do given the context of the situation? Ofc not. It's not okay to choke innocent babies. Unless for some reason that nurse knew the horrible things that baby would do when he grew up, you can't justify her suffocating that baby in its crib.

Does this make sense yet?

So yes Moka is doing the right thing (in hindsight) by trying to do the crazy, illogical things that she is doing, without even knowing if it's the right thing to do.

But no Moka is not doing the right thing from a contextual standpoint. This is a reflection of her personality.

A huge flaw for a captain is someone that will put their own personal feelings ahead of the well being of the ship that they're charged with.

Why? What would she be able to do to keep the retreating Harekaze safer, exactly, especially given that she's clearly too emotionally affected to command right now?

>Which is not what she should be doing, as she is the captain of the ship she shouldn't forsake the matters of the ship to chase after her own personal matters.
And as a human being, she shouldn't forsake her close friend who's relying on her to save her life. She's betting that she can save both even if objectively , because that's what heroic characters do.

If a character beating the objective odds and saving the day despite their unorthodox actions make you lose faith in them, I really don't think anime is for you. Or any fiction beyond soul-crushingly cynical dytopian stories, really.

>Let's say that baby Hitler is vulnerable in his crib
This is a terrible analogy. Killing random babies is not blind optimistic heroism, it's just killing random babies. It is what it is: a captain ignoring the clinical rationality of standard doctrine and trying to save the day without sacrificing what matters to her. Nobody knows what the right course of action is at the time, and the doctrine doesn't always get it right. That's not about hindsight, it's about disagreements on what the best thing to do is. Plenty of real-life war heroes are those who did the "wrong" thing, but it ended up paying off. Are those people also bad?

>A huge flaw for a captain is someone that will put their own personal feelings ahead of the well being of the ship that they're charged with.

>>
>>141248377
No. Mike technically didn't violate her order. She would be in trouble and be held answerable to a board of inquiry, but Mike did not order the Harekaze into engaging the Musashi, although she would have been interpreting her order of investigating and report way too liberally by trying to reach the Musashi.

Shiro on the other hand is something else.

>>141248489
Is not abandoning a ship in combat conditions considered desertion, even if it's for a "good" cause?

I would have expected her to give orders to close the distance and execute an offensive boarding action, with her leading the charge to rescue/detain the Musashi crew while helping to protect the other ships from further damage.

>Why? What would she be able to do to keep the retreating Harekaze safer, exactly, especially given that she's clearly too emotionally affected to command right now?
Morale, not undermining the command structure, setting a example of how to fulfill one's duty in the face of adversity, etc. etc.

>And as a human being, she shouldn't forsake her close friend who's relying on her to save her life. She's betting that she can save both even if objectively , because that's what heroic characters do.
Sure, but the ship should come first. She even said it herself, that all her comrades on the sea are like her family, so it's ironic that she would abandon them to go and try to 'save' moka. And by 'save' I mean suicidally charge through a figurative oceanic minefield littered with bullets and explosions.

>If a character beating the objective odds and saving the day despite their unorthodox actions make you lose faith in them, I really don't think anime is for you. Or any fiction beyond soul-crushingly cynical dytopian stories, really.
I have no problem with this. It's fine to be unorthodox. It is NOT fine to abandon your family in times of need and to shirk your duties just because you want to go see your friend. This isn't unorthodox, this is just scummy.

>This is a terrible analogy.
I was illustrating how just because dramatic irony exists, it doesn't necessarily make it right for the characters to act according to that irony. Yes killing the baby would save millions in hindsight, the audience knows that, however doing so is wrong and immoral for obvious reasons. Yes going to try to meet Moka is probably the right thing to do in hindsight since it will progress the plot and lead to developments and since the MC has plot armor, however abandoning the ship when she doesn't even know the things that we know, just illustrates her shaky character and resolve. She's unfit to be a captain and she should resign permanently.
