I will start drawing right now. A new character is about to enter the story so I'll prolly get the design just right after I fold all these fucking towels. I work overnight (where I do most of my work on the book)

And while we're on the subject, let me pick your brains for a second. How do you fags feel about dinosaurs in a quasi-serious tone?
>>
>>141200507
>it takes me 10 fucking hours to draw one page of panels JUST right, and after it's all said and done I still think it could be better.

Keep in mind that the projects you finish in life are more important than the projects you start. Heard this quote a while back.Think about the time and effort you're spending on just a single page when there are people who have entire volumes of work completed already. Is it really worth it? Do you want to hang art in a museum or create manga?

Yes because this might honestly make me a fuckload of money. I know fags always think their story is good, but I honestly think I have something here. I was more referencing you comment about still thinking your efforts need more work even after you're done. I really can't for two reasons.

1. it's not so much about the story as it is the characters
2. I don't wanna leak my ideas anywhere so I don't get Jewed

I guess I could tell you a bit about the main character without revealing too many details.

>orphan who grew up on the streets
>hates humanity
>crisis happens that threatens the world
>governments and boarders across the globe collapse
>MC basically journeys across the world
>meeting people
>some good, most evil
>slowly discovers that humanity is not all bad and that despite the overwhelming amount of human slime, humanity still might be redeemable based on the actions of the few good
Time travel is involved in this story, or I guess you could say it's the motif, so wish me luck. It's been a pain in the fucking ass tying everything together to make sense. That's been half the battle.

>>141200936
Oh, I understand. Thanks mate.

>>
>>141201111
Yeah, kind of. The endgame of the whole thing is my favorite part, as you basically find out about existence and reality. Lots of Schrodinger's Cat type stuff.

That being said, it's also heavily action-oriented. Through most of the story, it's mostly about the MC and his journeys with action sprinkled about, so there's plenty of substance and when action happens, it's satisfying as fuck for the buildup, at least I think so.

Kumeta, Takehiko Inoue.

When the artist goes ham on the screentones/shading.
Alternatively, when they draw those gossy "spots" all over a characters skin.
>>
>>141192088
Actually, many many japanese artists start off copying popular artists/artists they like, and many don't really learn how to draw "realistic" (which is to say, not highly deformed) before developing their own style. You also see this with western artists like the ones that infest tumblr and deviantart.

Not disparaging the artists that do it well, but I feel I should point out that it's not uncommon for artists to try to skip the "hyper-realism" phase of learning, and are sometimes successful.

The trick is to not worry about getting it "just right". You're never gonna manage that and still keep up a decent release schedule. You have to learn to cut the shit when it's due, not when it's ready.

>>141200719
>10 hours for one page is normal dude
Sure, if you're not riding up on a deadline and it's an important spread with lots of panels/details. Otherwise 10 hours is a gross misuse of time.

High polish plastic gives off a characteristic reflection together with a shine. You can tell what's plastic from those two. If you have a laptop you can probably see what I'm talking about. Although to be fair Prison School looks glossier, almost like a photograph.

Think of it like this:
Say you have 100 chapters to draw. Each chapter is on average, we'll say 16 pages long, at a release rate of 1 chapter a week like in a weekly magazine. 1600 pages to draw, which will take 667 days to draw if you take 10 hours a page.
Now consider how long your story is. If you've been deliberating so much, I'll bet you had more than 100 chapters in mind. Perhaps more than 1000. Realistically, you could die of old age before you finish your comic.

As someone who's working his way through making his own extremely long comic, I've had to think about this issue too. It would be nice to be able to make it perfect through drawing it and redrawing it until it looks perfect, but doing that will just result in you dying before you can finish the work at all. You need to learn to either get it perfect the first time or not at all.
>>
Is it me or /a/ is really slow today?
>>
>>141202114
The more immediate problem there would be what >>141201913 mentioned - sixteen pages a week at ten hours a page gives you a grand total of eight hours a week where you aren't drawing.

Shit nigger.

That being said, the story I'm working on has 3 arcs, so probably 3 books for each arc. Each book would probably be 500 or so pages.

If I ever do get this published though, I wouldn't be surprised if they had me add a shitton of filler so they could sell more than 3 books.

Oh, if that's the case then by all means be a perfectionist, provided you don't have much plans for your career afterwards. I'm speaking purely from a shounen jump chapter-a-week-every-week-for-years mindset. If you were aiming for more of a western indie comic kind of method then you're fine doing what you were doing.
>>
That manga about mountain climbing had stellar art.
>>
>>141202114
Wouldn't how much time you spent a week not make a difference to how long it would take to finish? I mean, you're on a weekly schedule, so regardless of your work time, the published story progresses at the same rate.
>>
>>141202269
I dunno, I guess we'll see.

What do you have to show to a publisher to get a story published? Like, the first couple of chapters and a plot pitch? I was thinking of bringing them a final product and having them take a look, then maybe collaborate with an editor and mass-market the thing. Is that how it would work? How would "auditioning" for Shonen Jump work? I'd stake my soul that my story is 100x better than 85+% of the crap SJ has had over the years.

It does if you miss weeks because you didn't finish the chapter in time. Plus you can use extra time to work ahead of schedule. You could finish the comic before the last arc is even released if you're diligent and don't get lazy/dont have a social life.

>>141202339
>What do you have to show to a publisher to get a story published?
Can't help you there, I'm self-published webcomic grade. But judging from what I've learned being a fan of manga, the pocess seems to work by basically pitching your comic and delivering a one shot sort of prototype version to deliver the premise and tone, and the editor decides whether you're worth the spot in the magazine. I'm not an expert from the industry or anything, just speaking from my experience of drawing a comic for a relatively short span of time.

That would depend on the publication, wouldn't it? But as long as it doesnt interfere with your ability to deliver a a quality product on time, I can't see it mattering.

You're overthinking this. A comic book is just a comic book, not a federal fucking issue. If you can make a product that makes people want to buy their magazine, then they will want to hire you.

Well for one thing by not wanting to give her traits that are contradictory.

If what you mean is to draw an attractive character that isn't flaunting her stuff, then just... do that? I don't see the problem here. Just draw a cute/sexy girl but in an outfit that doesn't show a lot of skin and isn't fitted too tightly.

If it's in a manga page then it applies both to this board and this thread. Photography is a form of art. If is used in a manga page it is part of the page's art. Ergo, photography can be manga art. I don't care whether you like photobashed manga art or not, but it's a perfectly valid way to create a particular look and atmosphere without committing what's essentially suicide-by-workload.

All well and good, but the very fact that I even brought this up is evidence that he just kind of fucked up here, because it's not having the intended effect and it's distracting me from the focus of the page.

I'm specifically referring to the top right, where it looked like someone dared the dude to draw the bush/tree/whatever with his eyes closed. The top left is fine and has the intended effect.

I'm not saying he's wrong to draw the background in less detail, I'm not saying it's a bad picture or that his composition is wrong. I'm pointing out a flaw that is, to me, quite glaring and obviously distracting.

If you were right, then there would be no discussion here because there would have been nothing for me to complain about. Again, even great artists mess up sometimes.
