Thoughts on Yoshitoshi ABe and his work?
I really liked Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze.
I don't watch his shows but I like his Kancolle art.

There was drama throughout anon. The show is about a girl taken from her previous life and thrown into a strange town filled with strange people who have strange customs and she doesn't handle it well from the very start. Look at Reki whose motherly, almost overbearing treatment of Rakka from episode 1 is explained by the drama that you have such disdain for. Even if you completely miss all the foreshadowing as you clearly have done, the SoL aspects end after episode 5.
The show is a mystery/drama one with the early episodes setting everything up.

The serious drama starts at episode 6 (with many aspects of it like Reki's treatment of Rakka being foreshadowing) and continues for the rest of the show. That gives 5 episodes of learning about the characters and worldbuilding. This really isn't unusual for any drama show. Rakka's drama then leads into Reki's that had been foreshadowed since episode 1 and strongly since episode 4.

I can only speak for myself but I can't say I'm particularly "hyped" for it, I just really want it to be released at some point. The pacing of the show perhaps is a bit slow, but I don't think the beginning is slower, it seems so because you don't know what's going on since there's no exposition.

Not that anon, but it seems Ueda was one of those (nowadays increasingly rare) producers who exerted a lot of creative control over their projects. If you watch the interview for Texhnolyze with him and ABe you very clearly get the sense that just like with lain, the original concept was intimately connected to Ueda. Obviously Konaka's scripts can't be discounted, and his trademark flourishes are all over lain and Texh but Ueda is probably at the heart of both of those works.
It's kinda sad that we probably won't see anything cool from him if Despera doesn't happen. It seems like the last cool thing he worked on was Shigurui with Hamasaki again.
Sora no Woto is Haibane Renmei done unpretentiously.
