Most of the things you said are a consequence of writers not having a deep knowledge of the type of culture they are trying to represent.

Just take a look at any western story based on Japan or China, you'll see the same kind of shit.

One of the oldest example is the story of Aladdin. Written by an Arab, supposed to be set in China with Chinese characters, it has nothing to do with China.

Wait.
Seriously?
>>
>>141161356
>Just take a look at any western story based on Japan or China, you'll see the same kind of shit.
Name one.
In my experience most western stories set in Japan or China go way, way too far in the other direction instead and have the characters act in a cartoonishly exaggerated way to what the writer believes oriental culture is like and try their hardest to emphasize the foreign quality of the setting. You usually end up with shit like, "Ken-SAN apologized profusely, bending his head to the TATAMI mat while expressing the deep SHAME he had brought to his KAZOKU, his family, begging that he be given YURUSHIMASU, or forgiveness."
>>
>>141161356
To be sure, most of it can be handwaved away as convenience and unfamiliarity with western cultures, but you simply can't explain people having Germanic names in a setting where they speak Japanese. How do you write "Reinhard van Astrea" in a language that doesn't have characters for half those syllables? レインハルト ヴァン アストレア is a far cry from the original.

There are no wish granting beings in China.

>>
>>141162057
Easy.
In said fantasy culture, tradition is to give children names from an antiquated classical language that's fallen out of common use.
It's fucking fantasy, anything can be handwaved.
>>
>>141161835
Yeah. The west tends to go overboard emulating the exoticness of a foreign culture's way of life, while the east just roughly imitates the aesthetic and pretends that cultures different to their own don't exist beyond the way clothes look and swords shaped.

Westerners like seeing the ways that other people live and do things, but don't give enough of a shit to do their proper research. Nips don't want to see how other people live their lives and do things, but they love the way things look, so they just insert their culture into a different style and backdrop.
>>
>>141162840
>they just insert their culture into a different style and backdrop.

Not him. But thats like one of the reasons why I actually watch animu.
>>
>>141163016
So you can watch a blonde, blue-eyed beauty in a Dragon Quest-esque setting stammer "i-it's not like I like you anything, generic protagonist-kun, don't get the wrong idea! I just helped out because I felt like it, that's all! Idiot!"?
>>
>>141163016
Me too.
I'd much rather have something familiar with a fresh coat of exotic paint than some comical, almost racist effigy of something the creators clearly don't understand but tried to pretend they did anyways.

>How do you write "Reinhard van Astrea"
Reinhard:
Written as: 勧勇
Furigana going Ra I N Haa To
"advice" and hard "brave, hardy".
Van is easy with Japanese and Astrea is a fictional place anyway.
>>

The problem is characters running around with names lifted out of one language speaking another language that's completely incompatible pronunciation-wise.

It's not even hard to avoid the problem. Just give all the characters Japanese names or made-up exotic names assembled from Japanese kana if you want them to be speaking Japanese in the setting.
>>
>>141159849

>>
>>141166960
The Troy movie was in English.
The Disney Aladdin was in English.
The trilogy of the man without a name was (partially) in Italian.
People really don't care. They just want the actors to speak a language the actors can speak and, if it's mainstream, a language that the audience can understand.
Something like Glorious Bastards is very rare.
>>
Fantasy stuff usually justifies this by magic language translation that doesn't work on written language
ie everyone SPEAKS japanese but the actual language is something else entirely

Those movies come with the implicit assumption that the characters are speaking another language in-universe and the English is just a translation for the viewers.

That's not the case for shit like No Game No Life and Re:Zero, where the main character literally states that the spoken language of the fantasy world is nearly identical to Japanese and only the written form is different.

That's quite an autistic question theme and question aesthetics, firstly LNs are simply for light reading, they share the same quality reading and level of writing that a middle school writing piece could have, they're in another world there's something called quantum physics in the many possible worlds you just ended up in some convenient world that has a language phonetics just like the one you are used to, but with differences that another language can have and lastly these light type of texts are supposed to be read with suspension of disbelief simply for your enjoyment, you want some actual story that can be considered go read wheel of time or war & peace etc.

It is a matter of convenience, yes, because the entire existence of an LN itself is a matter of convenience. An LN is the paperback equivalent of gas station sushi, you are figuratively agonizing over the quality of gas station sushi. The comparison to McDonalds some people make isn't super accurate, gas station sushi can give you cholera, McDonalds rarely does.

Your LN is a story about a fish out of water self insert protagonist who is somehow transported into a fantasy world/MMO. What language do the people on the fantasy world/MMO speak?

Answer: Japanese.

It is what the audience speaks. Therefore it is the most convenient language.

Nobody gives a shit if they take 2 sentences to explain why or not, because the people who are reading this are currently sitting on a bus on their way to a 9-to-5 job at Zaibatsu Corporation, or some dumb whale-spender hikki-NEET who has started reading this LN because of the shitty 2/10 anime produced last season by A-1 Pictures.

Decimalisation was historically the exception, not the rule. It wasn't until the 1700s after the Russian ruble was decimalised that it started to take off. Non decimal currencies were better suited to a medieval setting for convenience without widespread accurate weighing apparatus or calculators.

>somehow the rest of society completely fails to make use of these in any way whatsoever

Sometimes there's a half-hearted attempt to explain this by relegating the most useful utilities to magicians and making magic aptitude a rare skill to have, but even then there's a ton of useful skills that the physical classes can learn that could be applied to more mundane work like farming and construction work, but for some reasons farmers and construction workers just don't go learn them.

You're forgetting that to activate these moves they need to yell at the top of their lungs the name of the move. Do you really want a field full of farmers screaming "DRAGON BREAKER!" whenever they toil the fields?

For the Romans one Denarius was 1/48th of a pound of silver, I don't think it's far fetched at all for it to be 1/100th of a pound of silver in a fantasy world.

Also, apart from the yen this is pretty much how all currency is isn't it?

>either they use a decimalized currency divided into 10000 coppers = 100 silver = 1 gold, and conveniently one copper roughly equals one yen

This reminds me.

Those fucking adventurer ID cards that pop up in every web novel that for whatever reason are incredibly advanced in function compared to everything else, to the point of being basically fucking magical touch smartphones in some series?

You know what really rustles my jimmies about them?

How the fucking adventurer's guild can hand them out like candy to adventurers, but still use a fucking pen and paper notice board in the main lobby of the guild. Literally what's stopping them from erecting a giant adventurer card to serve as a self-updating notice board instead?

Firstly as I said, in the past you'd have currencies like British 1 pound = 20 shillings = 240 pence = 960 farthings; Spanish 1 peso = 8 reales = 680 maravedíes; Indian 1 rupee = 16 annas = 64 paise = 192 pies; Roman 1 aureus = 25 denarii = 100 sestertii = 400 asses = 1600 quadrantes.

And also not every unit of every currency equals 100 yen. However in pretty much all the isekai WNs out there somehow conveniently if you were to put together a consumer basket that would cost 10000 yen in Japan this also somehow costs 10000 (fantasy currency), with exact conversion, magically.

I hate that shit. With even the barest knowledge in economics would know that a straight up conversion that would makes no sense. You would have to compare purchasing power per unit of currency to even get close to a comparison. It's stupid shit like this that really break immersion whenever I'm reading. There is no fucking way a 1 gold coins is what ever stupid yen conversion the author is using. They don't even think about the differences in industrial capabilities and cost of living into those comparisons.

Most reincarnation series are cheap generic crap to get easy money. They don't bother to create an actual fantasy world since otaku will buy this shit nonetheless.
>>
>>141173697
The reincarnation helps it stand out, fantasy worlds are pretty much fanfic tier at this point.

Not when everyone else is doing it.
Straight fantasy is probably more unusual in Japan at this point.

People get a lot more interested when there's a reincarnation gimmick, a novel about a girl that gets reincarnated as a spider is a lot more interesting than a novel about a hero in a fantasy world.

Writers need more gimmicks desu, even mundane sounding stuff would be interesting.

I've always doubted the idea of an Adventurer's guild.

It seems to me most of their functions (monster hunting) would be better performed by the local government and its armed forces. The idea of any country being comfortable with what are essentially mercenary headquarters being established in every major city seems silly to begin with.

At the end of it the final boss vampire and when all hope was lost the farmer pc pointed out that every step of growing the things was holy and sanctified.
>>
>>141175731

Local governments and municipalities sometimes place bounties on varmints to encourage hunters and factor hunting into their pest elimination programs, and sometimes contract hunters to cull populations. It's not far off from adventurers guilds.
>>
>>141159849
Yeah, that shit gets pretty bad.
And the characters always fuss over honorifics and shit, and ask if it's alright to call them by their first name even immediately after introducing themselves by first name then last name.
I also see Japanese characters automatically assuming they need to introduce their names in the reverse order immediately after being summoned or whatever, as well as 'black hair, black eyes' being rare traits instead of yellow ski and flat facial features, AKA oriental features.

It just goes to show they aren't going to try to do any actual world building and just come up with shit off the top of their head.

It's just symptomatic of a larger issue that some of the older veterans in the field have often discussed at length.

I'm not gonna say "Hurr modern anime is shit muh 90s manime" or some other dumb bullshit, this discussion point has been a thing forever. Osamu Tezuka was complaining about this shit in the 70s.

A lot of the people writing this stuff often only adopt the most superficial aspects, often just gleaning what they know from other anime, or manga, or JRPGs or other similar otaku stuff like LNs, so their frame of reference is limited and their worldbuilding ability is crippled. A carbon copy loses something in the copying process, and so forth.

As its latest animated project looms and it threatens to be even more normalfag-friendly, or worse, /v/-friendly, I'm hesitant to use it but I think it's still a fine counter-illustration.

Berserk pulls a lot from western fantasy cinema like Excalibur(which, while itself is obviously based on Arthurian myth, also owes a lot to the Lord of the Rings) or Conan, and even a cursory reading of the plot would allow anybody to pick out obvious real world counterparts and parallels, and the fact that Miura is drawing from outside the usual /a/ stable I think really empowers him even when he's playing outside the usual mangaka comfort zone in purer western low/high fantasy, and isn't vulnerable to the same pratfalls and pitfalls as say, LN writers.
