They cut corners in the story a lot to fit it in the few ovas.
There is a fucklot that isn't in the OVAs, which is even more controversial since is longest ruining arc. Go for it if you want something stand-alone, not for something that represents the manga well.
I enjoyed them a lot, even tho I read the manga.

Yeah, they went with the more pseudo-realistic approach here, closer to something like GitS or Spriggan. It looks great.
