why is this so much better than DBZ?
>>

Because it had actual fights instead of teleporting everywhere and side characters still played roles

It just is
>>
>>141099238
It a real anime.
>>
Because you never read it
>>
Because it still had that magic and adventure feeling to it.

I wouldn't say it's better than Z, Z was good it just went in a different direction.

The only bad part about the canon is Super, which is just a soulless cash in.
>>
>>141099238
because it was super comfy, looking at old DB pics and seeing the gang all happy and looking at super and seeing characters like Oolong not even be characters anymore still makes me sad.
>>
DB and Z are the same fucking thing.

In an alternate universe, Toei never renamed the anime and no one ever makes a distinction between pre- and post-Raditz.
>>
Because Toriyama's forte is silly adventure comedy stuff
>>
>>141099238

no roided characters that always look constipated
>>
Toriyama's early artwork is so much better than what it has become
>>
>>141101496
There is clearly a change in the series' tone. It is not a hard switch between the two anime series, but rather a gradual shift that begins within the later parts of DB.
>>
It was fun and side characters were relevant. I liked DBZ but Dragon Ball was just more entertaining and I watched DBZ first.
>>
>>141101496
Between the piccolo martial art's tournament and the radditz/saiyan saga it goes from actual martial arts to characters blipping out, lazer beams and attack rushes so even though it is the same thing there's still a distinct change in style

This.
The writer didn't seem to enjoy making DBZ as much as his original series from what I've seen. Whereas Goku was originally playing out his own journey to the wast and encountering a vibrant world, things kind of fell apart as so much positive feedback focused on the fights.

I mean, goku isn't even revealed to be an alien until DBZ. Think about that. No power levels, no fifteenth forms (one hundred times more powerful than my last form!), and no massive budget to waste on twenty minutes of powering up and two minutes of fighting.

The original dragonball was a labor of love centered around a simple minded main character widening his horizons. It's nothing like what came after.

In that alternate universe, some fans divide Dragon Ball into the kid Goku arcs, adult Goku arcs, and the Gohan arc.
Kid Goku arcs = everything up until the Piccolo Jr. arc or Goku's marriage/Gohan's birth
Adult Goku arcs = Saiyan/Vegeta saga to the first half of Cell Saga
Gohan arc = Second half of Cell Saga + Buu Arc

Dragon Ball focused on character development and didn't take itself seriously. In Dragon Ball Z, the fights were more important than the characters themselves. And Akira Toriyama himself said he was growing tired of the story so he just made up the most extreme situations ever, even trying to kill his characters to end the manga sooner. Instead of making it less popular, the fans took it seriously and thought all the death and fighting made it more 'mature'.

Go play Dragon Quest IV, V, VI, Swords or Chrono Trigger. Toriyama literally just transplanted that character into those games.
>>
>>141102291
Can you really say the Buu saga was part of Gohan's arc? Goku ended up saving the day after all
>>
It isn't, only neckbeards think so because: 'LEL IM SO DIFFRNT I DUN LEIK DBZ!!!11 XDD!!"
>>
>>141101496
They would make the divides into pre Daimao and post daimao and pre Frieza and post Frieza
>>
>>141102820
Would you really group Taopaipai and Tenshinhan with Oolong and Boss Rabbit? The real divide is the 21st Budokai.

Smaller cast. This is especially noticeable in Super where you have an entire cast of characters but only 2 are relevant.
>>
Why do people act like the Red Ribbon Saga was lighthearted? It was about an evil army killing people in order to take over the world. It was just as dark as Namek really.

Arale, Ninja Murasaki, Pirate Cave
>>

The Pirate Cave wasn't funny. The closest thing it had to a joke was all of Blue's men getting impaled to death by spears.
>>
>>141103655
And Blue being a faggot.
>>
>>141103362
Though the Red Ribbon Army is fucked up when you think about it, I don't remember it ever really being depicted that way. It still had that lighthearted adventurous tone.
The exception is when Tao Pai Pai shows up, kills Bora, and destroys Goku - that's the first time the series ever gets really brutal, dark, and emotional.

I thought Red Reibbon was a massive shift in the tone of the series. Getting rather heavy and full of death for what was otherwise a show about an ignorant kid who was having fun fighting super serious guys. It 'broke' Goku into wanting to actually kill someone for the first time.

But it also had some of the best antagonists in the series.
>>
>>141103925
It starts off with Kintoun getting blown up, then Silver gets sentenced to death for failing to stop Goku.

But honestly after the first wish is when things first start to get dark. Pilaf stops being a joke and puts them in a death chamber, then Goku's tragic backstory is revealed and he goes on a rampage. It's a big departure from the Oolong diarrhea adventures.
>>
It's a shame there's not a decent batch out for it.
>>
I like Z better mainly because I didn't give two shits about most of the cast in DB.
