Free would have been better if it were either
a). actually about the sports, a la Haikyuu, or
b). a lighthearted SoL comedy, a la the Free OVA.
The drama was horrible generic anime writing. I'm a huge fudanshi and it was hard for even me to get through the show.

I was a huge Harufag and it was really painful and annoying watching the second season as one.
Just knowing that that Rinfag of a director intentionally butchered all Haru's development from the previous season so that Rin could look cool and "save" him pissed me off to no end. Don't particularly care about who won the Harubowl, didn't ship any of the boys together at all, I just couldn't sit through that shit.

Well, that's fair, I guess. I thought it was actually clever that it was Rin, who spent all of S1 needing to be "saved", be the one that helped set Haru on the path when he wasn't bothering to do so himself and was rejecting any suggestion that he needed to do so. It made the redemption of Rin an actual worthwhile event as opposed to him just having his relationships with the Iwatobi guys be repaired. I was more upset about the limbo Sousuke got left in than Rin being used as the leverage for Haru.
