You know, like, it looks like it makes fun of common cliches, but never subverts them and just keeps piling them up. As if they made fun of postmodernism in storytelling by never giving elements of interpretation obvious enough to make the viewer sure it's supposed to be ironic; the best illustration is their use of intertextuality, which only clearly references JK-Meshi based on two shallow similarities, that is cooking and the same studio being behind both. You'd expect some resolution of the barely meaningful significant there, but no, there isn't any referent given to what seemed like an ironic commentary. It reminds me of post-tonal music, which doesn't care about resolving dissonance.
Truly, Crane Game Girls is a masterpiece.
