I just wonder if the author is able to give them more personality. Most shows just live from the look of the characters and the one trait that their personalities are made of. It's enough to make otaku or fujo buy that shit.

This show is all style no substance. If you're expecting some kind of meaningful interplay with the literary references you're going to be disappointed. Characters are just named after famous authors and have a random chuuni super powers whose name is a reference to their writing. It's all just superficial though, the characters are nothing like the people they're based on and the powers have no resemblance to what they reference. It's like somebody just mapped the names onto a generic action series as a gimmick.
As for the story itself, the MC is obnoxiously whiny and has zero self esteem, the setting is paper thin, and there's little if any tension due to the half assed way the plots get resolved. So the main draw to the series, the action, ends up being a drag and the slice of life bits with all the seiyuu are the reason to watch it, except it's mostly just male characters interacting so unless you're into that there's not much reason to watch.

If you are into colorful battles with weird abilities, then it only gets better. Unless Bones is planning to make completely new story in second cour, the arc with overseas writers is a pure non-stop action delight.
But there are a hell of a lot of characters. Some of them may be annoying, some others not. There is a chance you like someone, but he doesn't appear in the story too often.
Humor may be problematic. If you don't like what you see in first episodes, then you probably will drop it quite soon, as the humor isn't toned down that much.

Actually, there are many subtle references to the real writers. My favorite example is Motojiro Kajii, who has yet to make appearance in anime. His short stories explain the character perfectly, once you read them, you'll understand, why he behaves like that in manga.
So, even though the references aren't so deep and thought-provoking, they are in manga/anime and authors did know what they were doing, the characters aren't completely random and it's not like you can exchange their personalities and still have links with actual writers.

There are almost no non-ability users in the stroy apart from the clerks and the killing-stock background characters.
