I dont think design is bad per se. They seem to went with Utility design, kinda Battletech like aestetic - unlike most anime mecha design which are stylized toys.
That said, they lack outstanding trait and look bit blocky - their only unique thing are balancer "tails" we not sure the purpose of still.
As for small feet, seems irrelevant seeing they litterally glide over ground on anti-grav.

I watched Gasaraki, but even at the time it was a pretty obscure anime and I bet a lot of people here weren't even into anime yet when it aired.
