I'll say this. It was the first anime I discovered and so I have an emotional attachment to it. I like seeing how it went from shit 90s quality to decent 2010s quality.
I've had to stop at 149 after some serious binging because I just can't handle the repetitive nature of the show and those fucking kids. But eventually I plan on getting back into it.
If you have no personal attachment to the show and aren't interested in it from an analytical perspective, do yourself a favor and skip the filler. Even some of the movies are stupid, albeit pretty.

I can't really answer you about "density", but watching only the episodes labelled as Black Organizations makes you miss an awful lot of relevant stuff (that even ties to the BO)

What do you expect your timeframe is/was to catch up? A week? A month?
While the latter is... possible, proper self-pacing really helps and following the show's natural binging periods.
For instance, the back half of the first hundred and some change have strings of AOs with irrelevant manga cases sprinkled in. Perhaps you thought it was a good idea to knock them out and ended up disgusted?
Even so, as you hinted you have to admit the show has a formula that it adheres to very well (and still does to this day) because it works. You can cut the filler out if you want to speed up the process and curb some of that repetitiveness but you will not escape itor the children.
Personally, it took me a year to catch up on/off watching everything and binging when it mattered (491-504) and I don't regret it. It was a great ride and I'd love to experience it blind again.
Good luck, follow your dreams. Skip filler if you must but just know the more you put into the series the more you'll get back.
