WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH?
>>

A not so good show with a great OP.
>>
>>141028564
boku no pino
>>
COME AND SAVE MEEEEEEEEEE
>>
A great, if not the greatest, anime about existentialism. Does /a/ know of more anime like this?
>>
Comfy anime
>>
>>141029473
smile land and the quiz show were the only comfy episodes
>>
>>141028564
A really shitty show that normies like for some reason.
Probably because of the OP.
And because it looks like it's INTELLECTUAL and DEEP.
i'll let you in on a secret
it isn't
>>
>>141029327
You mean boring grim anime? Texhnolyze, witch hunter robin are very similiar to this
>>
>>141029327
There's Naruto.
>>
A shitty, pretentious mess which some people pretend to like because they think it makes them seem intelligent and/or deep.
>>
>>141029643
>Someone actually enjoying something i dislike?
>obviously they're pretending to like it

My favorite internet argument. How is it people over 20 can have the mentality of emotionally stunted pre teens, and think that is a good way to be?
>>
>>141029585
Fuck you buddy, Texhnolyze was actually good.
>>
>>141028564
PINO IS READING A BOOK.!

FUCK OFF.!
>>
>>141029763
Agreed. Too bad i can never watch it again since the ending is just too soul crushing for me to endure a second time

A post-apocalyptic sci-fi journey of self-discovery. Very similar themes and structure to Evangelion, Casshern Sins and Kaiba.
It's really unique and stands out among most anime, imo.
OST is majestic and suits the atmosphere of the series. Characters are realistic and interesting. Themes of existential angst are things that we can all relate to.
Episode 15 which most people write off as filler actually serves to explain the backstory. Ergo Proxy is a very character-driven story so the plot takes the backseat to the characters. Like Evangelion.

Witch Hunter Robin is by the same director and has a very similar feel.
>>
>>141029706
In this case, due to this shit show having the pretence of depth, there is ample reason for people to pretend to like it.

In most cases I would agree with you, but this is one of the exceptions.
>>
>>141029989
>pretence of depth
How? From quoting philosophers? Does Psycho-Pass count as pretentious shit then, too? I think EP effectively covered themes of identity, purpose, and society among others. If you've read Plato's Republic and Allegory of the Cave, you'll notice lots of connections as well.

An anime with good and bad episodes looking like a heart beat monitor
But you had to watch them all to understand anything. ESPECIALLY the bad episodes.
Lots of good ideas and some bad ones thrown together and they don't really mix to well. It's kinda like that movie Event Horizon where it starts with one theme then swaps it for a random one mid way and it throws people off

The slice of life with Re-l was easily the best written episode though.

Ergo Proxy. It's the epitome of an atheist anime. It's basically a proclamation against a preordained existence. It promotes an individualist philosophy that's not tied down by faith. It could be interpreted as a pre-ordained existence vs forging your own destiny. Or "Divine intervention vs. Self-Determination". Vincent represents the "atheist" in that he has a self-realization that causes him to defy his creators and discover himself.

Proxy has huge meaning in this whole series. Ergo Proxy being the proxy of Proxy One, Proxies being the proxy of the Creator, artificial human being the proxy of the Proxies, auto reivs being the Proxy of artificial human, Re-L and Real being the proxy of Monad.

A show that abandoned it's cool premise in favor of pretentious wankery and needless convolution
A show in which the only reason to continue watching is Pino being one of the cutest ever

It actually is pretentious though, as much as I hate using the term considering how much of a non meaning its gotten here on /a/ I cant think of a show more deserving than Ergo Proxy besides maybe GITS Innocence or something by Nasu

I weirdly still haven't tried watching Ergo Proxy. I absolutely loved SEL and thought Paranoia Agent was a ~8/10, but was left feeling ambivalent about Texhnolyze, and utterly hated Psycho Pass. Do you think I'll like Ergo Proxy given all of that?

I felt like Psycho-Pass was much more heavy-handed in it's philosophical rambling. I enjoyed it as an episodic cyberpunk series (along the lines of GitS: SAC) but the main themes really fell flat for me.
Ergo Proxy is definitely very unique. Give it a shot. I think you'd like it.

Remaster it? It was the first anime to air in true high definition. There is a Blu-Ray release.

Unless you're referring to the inconsistent quality throughout the series. Pic related. Re-l could look so different from one ep to another.

Plato is as basic as philosophy gets, though. Alluding to basics doesn't mean it does a good job at exploring the themes mentioned. There are a handful of shows that try to do the same and end up doing a much better job at it.

From a philosophical standpoint, the show is interesting to a layman. However, anyone who's read at least Descartes or even Hume, it's childish and embarrassing.
