It makes me so sad this never came to be. Raidou games gave me a love for that 1920's Japan setting and I'd love to see more stuff in that setting. Was the light novel any good?

Well I think the project was initially put on-hold because he was sick and they were waiting for him to get better, so I don't think he was ever going to have a chance to finish it himself in the first place.

It was a lot easier to get ABe/Ueda/Nakamura projects made back in the late 90/s/early 2000s when there were studios like Madhouse willing to take a chance on weird, artsy stuff that wasn't going to make them much money. I can't imagine there are too many studios/directors interested in spearheading a project that's almost guaranteed to not turn a profit.

I'm sure there are some, but unfortunately they're swallowed by the overwhelming mentality of the industry.
Just looking at the crap that gets spewed out season by season, with next to no emphasis on the artistic and intellectual makes me utterly sick. The average audience has no taste whatsoever.
