What anime did you enjoy that totally flopped in Japan? Do you think a series popularity is usually indicative of its quality, and if not: why do you think some good series fail?

A lot of good series flop, just like a lot of bad series do. I don't think it's a reflection of quality always, it's more complicated than that. I still don't get it myself. Samflem was really fun.

>>140980527

No one actually thinks this. People just say it when they're trying to convince others that the Anime they like is shit.
>>

>Zettai Bouei Leviathan
Hardest flop even with the top cast. It always happens to my favorites.
>>
>>140980527
Popularity is a complex phenomenon, partly because there are a number of different ways that a show can flop or succeed, not all of which are easy to distinguish from the outside.
If the BDs sold poorly, but the LN that it was based on got a huge uptick in popularity, that could be just as good for a studio that didn't invest its own money but would like to see repeat business from the publisher.
If the action figure line sold poorly but BDs sold well, that could be a wash for a studio that recently inked an expensive deal with an action figure company.
>>
>>140985336
Top cast, but low budget, and general low profile work.
It isn't a real flop financially speaking, but it is still sad.
>>
>enjoying shows which flop
If it doesn't sell, then it's shit.
If it sells, then it's shit too.

Everything is shit.

We're not talking about profit, we're talking about popularity.
For example, Ufotable's God Eater sold decently when it was bundled with the game, but sold terribly as a standalone. The studio and the game company made a profit but the anime in itself was ot popular.

>>
>>140985617
Define popularity, though, if we're not going off of sales.
You can see what the most talked-about shows are or look at AOTY polls, but that suffers from the problem of bad shows looking good due to a bad season.
And something being meme'd on a lot doesn't necessarily mean it's popular or well-regarded.

While it wasn't a flop, I feel like Tamako Market deserved to sell a lot more. It was really good and so much love was poured into it.

>>140986263
I liked Tamako Market but it wasn't really anything spectacular, so it's not exactly surprising that it sold average at best. Even Phantom World was a more surprising flop.
>>
>>140986273

It was horrible but fun to watch with /a/
>>
>>140986273
SamFlam is a legitimate masterpiece.
>>
>>140986359
I watched it alone and still liked it. It wasn't as hype as watching it with /a/ i imagine.
>>
>>140985637
Man, Basquash is my favorite trash-tier, nobody-watched-this anime ever. I still have the OST on my phone.

Such high potential, ruined by a director change.
>>
>>140986456
I watched the first half and kinda dropped it then. How was the end?
>>
>>140984909
I actually liked the series, game is coming out soon in Nipland. I pm'd Uchikoshi about it and he told me there might be a US release of the game so I can probably import it, by watching the show it's clear that it would work much better as a game. Still, very much fucking hyped for ZTD.

Anyway, to answer OP's question, I think Shinsekai Yori flopped pretty hard in Japan and that's like my favourite show ever.
>>
>>140985530
Don't listen to overhyped weebs, the show is pretty much 'Nothing's Fucking Happening: The Anime', very boring and slow progression that ultimately leads to nothing at all and you stand there regretting the time you put into it. It's watchable but pretty meh

Though marketing and exposure to the right audiences serves a big role, popularity is still the only way to judge something's general quality. It may still be completely different from your personal taste of course.
Samflam is probably the hugest gap I've seen between something I love and its low popularity.

I feel like every season I have a show I adore but lament the fact its selling like shit. But this especially, although its still airing, has skyrocketed into one of my favorite shows in fucking years.
>>
>>140987536
Of course I did, I wouldn't spout my opinion without watching the show, that's what retarda do. Again, it's not 'drop it like it's hot' bad but it's not that good either, starts off as a "comfy" slice of life and slowly becomes a superhero action slice of life, it's still a boring slog that focuses too much on the characters without actually expanding them at all.

Stuff exploding and fighting big bad guys isn't a "wild ride", it's just over the top nonsense just to distract you from the severe lack of any plot, a wild ride would be a show that constantly advances the plot with the introduction of key elements to the story, twists and character development. Monster for example is much more of a wild ride in this regard because throughout the show you constantly wonder how deep the rabbit hole goes whereas in Samurai Flamenco you just expect the next over the top enemy or incident that will make you go "LOL THAT'S SO RANDUMB" right before you have to suffer through another 10 minute dialogue about the meaning of justice or some other dumb shit
>>
>>140987881
First season was pretty damn good but I haven't really been feeling the second season so far.
>>
>>140987881
I'm sad it's selling badly but they did try to sell the first BD with a single episode.

This reminds me Space Dandy sold terribly despite being one of the best looking and unique anime made. We're all lucky Bones keeps trying to make originals despite them failing frequently.

I got no problem with the style, my issue was at the time it was airing you'd either have to deal with horriblesubs which pretty much ruined a show like that when its all about style, or wait for days for the good or typeset subs and miss all discussion. Flipping back and forth had me dropping it with the intention of watching it when good subs were wrapped up, but I never got around to it. One of those LNs people say isn't like other fantasy LNs but still has mook enemies with named power levels despite not having anything to do with games.

Samflam was a great deal of fun, but there was a extremely weak period during there when they were just playing monster of the week for far too long. Was getting sick of it and considering dropping it until it picked up and went full masterpiece in the back half of the series.

Producers fucked Kyoani over with 2 episode, even more overpriced BDs.
That and earthquake.

Nichijou.

For shame.

Didn't Akatsuki no Yona flop?
Samflam, Michiko and Hatchin, lots of things people mention here. Hell, Gundam 0079 and Zeta Gundam were flops.

In the end I love plenty of things that were not popular, but still have loving fan bases or got more appreciated after their runs. Look at popular movies in the west or popular songs -- it's about appeal and not about any sort of objective artistic quality. Plenty of legit masterpieces get famous, but plenty of utter shit does too.

I liked these. Some more than others, but I enjoyed them all.

I also loved Chaika and it flopped.
But the real evidence that sales don't mean quality is Uchouten Kazoku.

>Zeta Gundam were flops
Well deserved. It's pretty shit (especially compared to the original) and the main character is an unlikeable dickhead.
>>
>>140992564
True on Zeta, but the original was a flop anyway as well. Then one of its characters became the Japanese equivalent of Darth Vader in pop culture. It goes to show that current sales don't reflect a bunch, but they usually spell complete doom for a show anyway. Only some anime escape that fate, the ones lucky enough to have successful LNs or manga or merch which is the minority. Less and less people are watching anime though while manga sales are still fine.

The show was overall great, but there were times when I was like, "Why is this so dark, why aren't Michiko and Hatchin spending more time together? I thought this was supposed to be about their wacky adventures."
>>
>>140985129

It was really fun watching it with a bunch of first timers at my uni's anime club. I still have a video of everyone's reaction to Guillotine Gorilla, but it's a grainy 3DS video because my phone died so I haven't uploaded it anywhere

Shimoneta's jokes got stale very fast and it's potential was killed in the first 3 or episodes. It could've been more, the concept was awesome and they actually could've made real critique about censorship in 2015. They didn't and after a few steps the show fell on it's face straight into a steaming pile of shit. It's possible they got scared of the ramifications if they had gone further.

It ended up being yet one more bland, ecchi fanservicey romantic comedy with stunted story and character progression.
>>
>>140985952
If they just had adapted some things beyond the first book it would have worked better.

0079 was a flop, but zeta was definitely not. Neither in ratings, home video or mechandise sales. It made a shit ton of money and was a source of copy cat plot lines and character archetypes for both gundam itself and other unrelated shows.

If zeta was a flop, there would not have been a ZZ, CCa, or any other gundam series after.
>>
>>140993356
The OP was nice, but the show itself was incredibly boring.
>>
>>140993455
Was Zeta the one that was forced to end a few eps early, or was that 0079?

I watched it hooked up to my tv with friends after school and then shitposted about it afterwards. Equally fun with real friends and /a/. Don't know how much I would have enjoyed if I had to sit through the flamengers arc alone though.

Like, yes, objectively SF is shit, but I formed such an emotional bond, and I've shared it with so many friends since 2013... it's still one of my favorite shows of all time, but context is definitely important.
>>
>>140993679
Will there ever be a Uchoten Kazoku s2? How much more material is there? I loved that shit.
>>
>>140986273
It's genuinely a masterpiece. I watched it alone after being spoiled from seeing thousands of gorilla threads on /a/, and it was the perfect the whole way through

People who say it's "objectively bad" are objectively dumb
>>
>>140993983
Anime covered 1 novel. Author published a second one (of a supposedly planned trilogy). So there's at least enough material for another season. Uchouten Kazoku Nidaime no Kicho (The return of the second generation) is the title of the second novel, the "second generation" refers to a generation of tengu.

There's always the possibility that it was unpopular in Japan but popular here, like >>140992280 says, because the show was originally made in a way which appeals to Western audiences rather than Japanese ones.

>>140987968
Not him but I loved Samurai Flamenco. Partly for the LOL SO RANDUMB comedy, yes, but also because I found it well directed. Moments that had to be impactful really hit for me. Whenever they didn't I was busy laughing anyway. The mix of comedy and drama just worked for me.

Kaze no stigma, but I think the author died or something

No one liked the Flamengers arc, it ended strong but there was a break, slow beginning and too much dragging.

>Do you think a series popularity is usually indicative of its quality
It depends on the show. However what matters most is your own opinion

>and if not: why do you think some good series fail?
Sometimes there's no reason for otaku to buy it at all. Like the manga is already done or they just want to buy the source material directly. Other times, there are shows that may be good but not "i want to own this" good which I think happens a lot more than people think. The people who don't buy anime don't have unlimited funds. Sometimes they are fine with their DVR recordings or whatever. It's the ones that give off the feeling of "support me" and appeal harder than others are the ones that get the real sales

Went looking for information about a second season for that recently. Seems it'll be second season never ;_;
