it's pretty much the same concept for why EVERYTHING becomes shittier once it becomes popular
in any given group of people, a decent chunk of them will be stupid pieces of shit.
but, when the group is small, even though the slice of the group that's shitty is proportionately the same, there are fewer total, so they either keep their stupid shit to themselves or are relatively easily slapped down when they rear their ugly heads
but once a group hits a certain critical mass in size, there are now enough of the shits in total that they begin to back eachother up and when they say and do their stupid shit, they now have a bunch of supporters, and feel justified in their stupid opinions and actions. people will still attempt to push back but since not-shits tend to be in general more non-confrontational than the shits, it doesn't work anymore because there's not enough opposition to push the shits back down anymore.
every fanbase is terrible. it's just the smaller it is, the less you're aware of it.

Fair enough /vg/ has some sort of purpose, there are people who will play 10 year old games, want to play with others and can generate some discussion but /a/ general serve no purpose other than image dumps that are dumped every thread or a chat room for tripfags and named users to wank each other off.
Anime discussion dies off, that is the nature of the beast you can only discuss a series so much before nothing is left. When that happens people usually leave and move onto a new anime with some threads somewhere down the line like remember how we liked this anime but in the last few years people seem to try and keep dead anime discussions alive and sometimes it sticks.
I still don't know why that Umaru shite is allowed, there is 0 discussion it just an image dump thread with memes, kick it to /c/ already.

You can definitely still have discussion about old shows. The reason you have a general isn't for old shit, it's for shit people constantly want to talk about. The problem with generals is that there isn't stuff to consistently talk about, so like you said the thread devolves into metashit, image dumps, and other various bullshit. But being old has nothing to do with it. This happens with currently airing shows too.

In this instance I defined old shows as being shows that are not currently airing , you seen it once KLK finished the core of poster had moved on with the season but a lot stragglers wanted to keep the threads going because of their buddies.
I don't know if it new posters or crossboards but a lot of people get pissed on how quickly we move on to the next season when it comes to threads.
Discussion for genuine old shows form 90s/80s tend to be the same discussion over and over again but not on a regular basis.
You will see threads pop up every so often about a show from 10 or 20 years ago and generally it will either die off or it will be repeat the same discussions or talk about how people are watching it again or just post dead memes.
It one of the reasons people thought a retro anime board would not work.
