How am I wrong? I watched it when the OVAs were out but this time around it really seems like the Vist Foundation set up and escalated a war just to sell weapons. The dub leaves out a lot.

Vist Foundation had different opinions within it's organization. They themselves didn't want to sell weapons, it was Martha Carbine who had a controlling stake of Anaheim Electronics that wanted to continue selling weapons to both sides. Though, mind you they were selling weapons to both sides since the 0083. Syam and Cardeas wanted to see the box opened to set things right.
That's why Cardeas asked to take the Unicorn Gundam from Anaheim for further development, only to install the La+ Program into it without them knowing. So a true Newtype could find the location of the box, since it was Syam and his view that only a Newtype should be the one to decide if they should open the box or not (Give the last article refers to them directly.) They originally intended to hand it over to the Zeon remnants because not only did they feel like they'd have a true Newtype within their cause, but because they'd have the most interest in opening it.
The whole thing was everyone reacting to the Newtype boogieman, as Martha and Alberto felt like opening the box would allow people to sympathize with the Zeon Deikun's views of Newtypes and independence for Spacenoids. Thus, they wouldn't have a reason to sell weapons to both sides anymore.
The issue with Unicorn and almost every other Gundam side story is it relies heavily on understanding the universe to a decent degree.

The OVAs were releases in dual audio right off the bat.
Sunrise does pretty decent dubs all things considered.The entire crew of the Garencieres had better fitting english VAs than Japanese VAs.
Not saying the dub is better, but it's quite well done.

You really should at least watch the movie trilogy recap movies for 79, chars counter attack, and Zeta/ZZ since Unicorn has many returning characters and plot lines that only make sense in context, unless your just watching for animation.

I think the first movie is faulty of removing things that should be better left in . That probably has to do with the 0079 being pretty strong for the first 12 or so episodes, there's not as much useless fat to trim as the rest.
