Even if she isn't the mastermind, she definitely has something to do with the events that went down there. If she was just a curious college student who went to the village to study it, why would she randomly start singing creepy songs mid-conversation and then ignore the issue when asked about it? I think she is casting a spell whenever she is singing that song. Perhaps it was a prerequisite to reach the village in the first place, or sends them to a dimension/time where the village exists.
My current theory is that she sends the group to different dimension when she sings that song. The village and the surrounding area exist in that dimension as well as our own. Some things carry over, such as the plants (people are living in the regular Nanaki village and take care of the plants and that's why the forrows are well-maintained) but other things do not (i.e. the people themselves or their buildings - which explains the appearance of train tracks which aren't on the map).

Could it be that Masaki is compltely immune to the illusions? When she retells the story of Yottsun's disappearance, he also saw something but when the camera shows where he was looking, nothing is shown. That's because the story is told from Masaki's perspective.
What's special about her? She pukes all the time. Perhaps there is some substance which causes the hallucinations but her body rejects it. She pukes it out and that's why she isn't affected.

Worst art and animation of all the original series, worst art and animation of this season actually.
All the characters are shallow stereotypes and their character drama is bound to be uninteresting or over the top edgy shit.
Main character has flashbacks due to some super DEEEEP edgy traumatic experience he had as a kid just because.
Another weak reactive main character who can't move the plot on his own, so things just happen to him, literally other characters move him from one plot point to the next and he has no clear motivations/goals.
His just another uninteresting beta mc, who'd be better as a side character desu.
The idea that living together in a lost village will somehow make their lives better is absolute pretentious garbage, holy shit who wrote this.
Overall 3/10, worst show this season by far. I'd rather watch Kiznaiver, at least that show won't take itself so seriously so I can just laugh at it.
Also Masaki totally isn't some bitch from the village but her falling in love with mc + tragedy(classic) will make her save him in the end.

What if the whole area has an air toxin, an Hallucinogen that acts when the subject is in a situation of High Stress.
At some point they said that the village was a test site of some experiments of the army, and every time someone has seen something, they were in a situation of High Stress.
In tunnel, they were all pretty scared. Yottsun was excited with Misaki. Mitsumune obviously was escaping from a fire after being threaten with torture. Jalapeno no Fudgeness was with all the rest stresed after the long walk.
Seeing this, it even match the grade of stress. The ones most relaxed saw only glimpses and those who were most stress saw giants.
