You can watch any Macross without seeing any of the others. You'll miss out on some callbacks and a little bit of context, but that context mostly relates to the inherent silliness of the franchise.

One single thing I hated about Frontier was the love triangle, or rather, Alto, the most fucking bland and devoid of personality of all the bland and devoid of personality main male characters, being at the center of a love triangle.

MC is a dick to pretty much everyone close to him, though that dickery is helping to shape their relationships quite nicely. The banter between him and Freyja is pretty enjoyable.

Yes, Delta was my first experience with Macross and I had no problems. I enjoyed the first few episodes so much I marathoned through SDF and I'm now starting on 7. It's a really enjoyable series.
