It depends on the execution and who the character is and who they are talking to, sometimes it's really well done, sometimes not so much.

It took me awhile to realize how awkward this is and how only anime does it. Rewatching shiki last night I got to where they take and kill the old lady Doctor Ozaki had cured, and his reaction of

It's somewhat of the same logic behind "what makes the monster so scary is how little you see of it."
For some people, their imagination fills in the gaps with something superior than anything that could be actually said.
Doesn't work for me personally as I think it's lazy writing.
