A translator friend of mine who's been studying for about five years said I should maybe try translating some manga. Been out of practice for a long time so I decided to give it a whirl, and man even though I was dealing with a shonen comedy manga I wanted to tear my hair out. My translator friend got back to me after looking at my work and about for about half of it I almost completely missed the point of the dialog.

The more time I spend actually using the language the more, I just kinda stay quite and try not to give advice or translate shit while just letting it sink in. It's humbling when you actually try to read non anime shit, and try to pay attention to the news or radio broadcasters talking, or watch commentary on sports events. Once you get away from "onii chan no chinchin daisuki” shit it's eye opening.

You could also look up Kanji (in the most common order) on Jisho ( http://jisho.org/search/*%E7%B2%A7* ) and add the words which come up. There's also a note on what's a common word and what not. Someone said the most common list is not so accurate but I think it works fine. The words are sorted by frequency.

I think the order of the 10K deck is a lot better than that of the 6K one. It's a shame that you have to manually reposition and reschedule the cards from the one from the CoR to get the order right, and there are no instructions with the deck telling you that since the shared deck page for it on the Anki site is gone. The 10K deck from the CoR also doesn't work right with KanjiGrid for some reason (the "order found" order is wrong).

I like to read people's questions and possibly their answers, if there are any. When someone posts anything in Japanese I like to try reading, which usually fails, but I try to identify some known kanji either way. Same thing when someone posts a manga page or something. I just so happened to understand that one completely, which is surprising given how little knowledge I have.
