M-MUH DIBS

I get subbing groups hating to duplicate work and refusing to start working on a series that is already getting subs, but ragequitting because somebody else joins the scene is pretty retarded.

Just because you called dibs on translating something doesn't mean others can't work on it if they want to. All this crying about "stealing" is pretty pathetic.

>>140881786
I don't remember anime subs doing this much. They did something similar if a show they're on got picked up by simulcasting but anime sub groups rarely bitched at each other for doing the same show. It was fairly common to see multiple groups doing the same show all the fucking time and nobody gave a shit and put out their own subs at their own pace.

Great way to test your vocab or polish it, abysmal and slow way to learn it. Just my 2 cents though, might work for others.
>>

Asking for help with problems is okay.

Taking a role of an informed authority such as a translator when you're just a novice yourself is not. Essentially, if Japanese isn't as clear as a sunny afternoon on the plains to you, you have no place being a translator. That's a betrayal of trust.

I, too, once fell for the "you can drop anki" meme. I later regretted it, and my learning skyrocketed forward when I started actually sticking to anki.
>>
>>140882268
What's also funny about them complaining how others are "stealing" projects, is that they're without a doubt stealing the work of the creator, translating without his permission or distributing it through channels he never approved, without him seeing any compensation. And they're sitting on their high horse, telling others what they can and cannot do.
>>

>>140882768

>>
>>140882890
By leaving the words in their context. So that means listening/reading japanese "stuff" with translations. That isn't to say that learning vocab the "flashcard" way doesn't have its place, I just don't see how anyone can honestly believe creating a database of 2k+ flashcards with a word + definition is a good way to learn a language. I speak 5 languages, I have learned none of these with flashcards, and anyone I have met who HAS learned these languages with flashcards tend to make typical non-native mistakes

To give you an example; Japanese people who learn English. They get taught English the "flashcard" way, just lists of words and rules which they bruteforce into their brains. The result is very stiff and unnatural English conversational skills. Ask one of these people "How are you doing?" and you will invariably receive the response "Fine, thank you. How are you doing?", because that is how their textbook has taught them this, when X respond with Y.

Again, and I can't stress this enough, bruteforcing vocab has its place. Just don't turn yourself into a walking dictionary, you'll know 2000 japanese words and still not be able to hold your own in a conversation.
>>
>>140882976>>140883109

Thanks guys. I have one more question, how much vocab should I know before I start reading manga?
>>
>>140883204
As long as you have a dictionary you're good
>>
>>140883204
If you can read kana and can google you're good
>>
>>140883217
I mean as in, use a dictionary in the beginning until you get it into your brain. Then after seeing it a lot, you begin to memorize it and eventually interpret it depending on the context of what you're reading
>>
>>140883204
Just start reading it whenever you get time next to your regular learning. At first it will be painfully slow, frame by frame. When I started I viewed it more as a puzzle than actual reading. I started with LN's and it would literally be letter by letter. But the satisfaction I got from recognizing patterns, or having some sort of mini epiphany about a certain aspect of the language was very nice. Also nothing could beat the feeling of finally getting to the end of a page and being able to say "I can read that now, I know what that says".
>>
>>140882741
>>140882768

>>
>>140883109

Steve Kauffman used flashcards to learn to read Chinese characters, and he's just about the most pro-reading person that you'll ever meet.

You're right in saying that you don't just don't stop with flash cards. However, it's an extremely speedy way of beefing up your vocabulary in order to make reading and listening easier. And Core 6k is great, because everything there is common, and it's completely voiced, which can help with retention.

>you'll know 2000 japanese words and still not be able to hold your own in a conversation

2000 words isn't enough to hold any kind of relaxed, meaningful conversation. You can use caveman language to clumsily handle a number of simple tasks, such as greetings, some simple off-handed comments, depositing a check, asking where [insert one of the relatively small number of location nouns at your disposal] is, or calling for help in a variety of emergency situations, and you'll only understand the response if the other party talks to you as if you were a baby. In order to hold a good conversation where both sides are comfortable and enjoying themselves, I'd say that you need at least five times that amount, depending on the subject matter. Roughly 10k tends to mark the fluency line according to CEFR.

>>140883204

As soon as you finish a grammar guide. You can use kanjitomo and jisho for unfamiliar kanji. Actually, I'd kinda recommend VNs. They tend to be a bit higher on the difficulty scale compared to shounen manga, but texthookers + rikai auto import makes it very easy to build a mined anki deck. Have Dictionary of Japanese Grammar (all three of them) handy.

What are your thoughts on LQ scans?

By which I mean groups using scans from Korea with the huge ass Umaru watermark, and translating it from Korean with Times New Roman as a font
>>
>>140884127

Anon, suppose that someone is drowning. A foreigner with 2k vocabulary who hasn't learned the word "drown" yet sees him and says "This man is not breathing well because of the water!" Can he get his point across? Sure. Would holding a conversation with him be a pleasant experience without any confusion? Definitely not. He lacks the raw vocabulary to express himself articulately.

There's a difference between just having an accent and having such a small base to work from that half of what the natives have to say is lost on you, and your own wording can be a bit clunky and confusing. The former can come across as extremely intelligent and fun to be around. The latter tends to come across as a bit stupid, and isn't really enjoyable enough to talk to that he can make real friends.
>>
>>140884323

>>
>>140884378
>And what if the better alternative means having to wait for a few more days?
Then there's no real reason to do scans from korean except to fuck over the respective group working on it.
>>
>>140884328
~15k is what most natives have, depending on the language and level of education.
>>
>>140884426
That confirms my thoughts, good.
>>
>>140884378
You choose what scans you read and whether to wait for something. It's up to personal standards and no one can tell a scan group to fuck off, no matter how shit they are, just because they don't like them. That's literally the same shit autistic retards that demand their monopoly on translating pirated scans from a manga do. If the good translator stopped because people like LQ speed tl's then he didn't give a shit about anything other than e-peen and ad money in the first place.
>>
>>140884469

Pretty sure that 30k-40k is more typical for an adult Japanese. 15k is more middle school level, if not a little younger.
>>
>>140884513
As part of the team who works on Nisekoi I agree with you that people should be able to pick for themselves what they read, it's just that most aggregation sites upload the first English release there is, regardless of quality.

And while I also think that people should download instead of reading it online, most of the people who read manga don't bother doing that, so they're stuck with the shitscans.
>>
>>140884573
Just drop Nisekoi if you feel like you're wasting your time and pick up something else that you like.
>>
>>140884602
Nah I don't feel like I'm wasting my time. As forced as the plot has been lately, I still enjoy it.

And it's not like I spend a lot of time on it. After switching to the digital WSJ raws, shit's been easy to work on.
>>
I don't get how there are so many scanlators that put effort into translation and all that but completely drop the ball when it comes to grammar and cleaning, it's really easy to do.
>>
Why don't you just ask Crunchyroll to pick it up?
>>
>>140883905
They do. You clearly haven't been paying attention.
>>
>>140884631

Either that or teenagers who are going to get on facebook as soon as they're done (likely have a piss poor understanding of Japanese, too).
>>
>>140883616
>2000 words isn't enough to hold any kind of relaxed, meaningful conversation.
Wasn't the point I was trying to make. Merely pointing out that even if you can reproduce a plethora of different words and their definition, it doesn't mean you'll be able to converse properly. sure you'll be able to make yourself understood by stringing together the words you know.

Want to become fluent in a language? Move to that country, you'll learn their way of expressing themselves, their common idioms and their slang. Not only that, but you can't opt out of learning, you can't go "don't feel like practicing today", tough shit, that supermarket doesn't into English, deal with it. I have had to do it 4 times, and it has been the absolute fastest way to learn the languages (although pretty rough at times and not the prettiest of sights).

I had to learn it due to job circumstances.

The grammar is inconsistent as fuck
The vocab needed enormous since you have a special little dutch snowflake word for every object under the sun.
The pronunciation basically requires you to redevelop your vocal chords, only African tribe languages beat you at impossible sounds needed to express oneself.
Every other sentence you lot use is some sort of expression or obscure idiom for which you need to take a history course to understand its full and proper significance.
Then to top it all of you fags now decide to just throw in English willy nilly, which is confusing as fuck because as an outsider you initially have no idea what Dutch words you lot have decided to substitute with the English equivalent.

It is by far the hardest language I have had to learn, you'd think a language like German would be harder, but it isn't because it is far more consistent. Dutch is just all over the fucking place.

Ya, so what? You think nips have a language gene? There are Nips born and raised in America who speak English perfectly while not being able to understand Japanese, and then there are Americans born in nipland who speak Japanese perfectly.

It is a case of applying yourself, if 100 million people learned it, so can you. You just need to sit down and learn it, not spend 15 minutes a day glossing over anki and expecting it to magic itself into your brain, no, actually bathe yourself in the language.

I'm sorry you had to go through that, anon.
>>140883527
Yeah, I can relate to that. It happened to a series I found out about recently that I tried to read. It was literally badly written english translated from portugese, and that was one of the moments that really drove it home to me that I would be better off just learning japanese myself.
>>

You pretty much just described how English appears to a non-native.

I don't know dutch, but it can't have as many weird pronunciation quirks as English, right? Though, rough, through, thought, bough and all that bullshit.

This is what I love about Germany. Except fucking a few names up they don't just translate, no, they even improve the dialog adding more context to it. Seriously English un/official scans are most of the times garbage. If you can you should go for the Jap/German/French version instead.

Dutchie learning Japanese here.
While it's true that Dutch is a retarded language full of inconsistencies and asshat logic, you can at least read Dutch.
Japanese is on a different level with the vast amount of Kanji alone. I also really dislike how to put emphasis on their verbs by adding a shitton of gibberish that's supposed to make sense. It makes it so much harder to translate.

You can teach monkey to use sign language, it doesn't mean monkey can speak in human language or you in monkey language.
Same here. Children learn dominant language has nothing to do with it being easy to learn or speak. Even more so if you're an adult and you have learned entirely different native language.
>>
>>140885281
I did a little bit of scanlation at one point.
My 'fondest' memory is making an easy mistake in one of the chapters (translating a characters name because I didn't realise it was a name due to no honorific), and then, months later, getting the official release and seeing the same mistake.

I mean I'm crap at it but at least I'm not trying to claim a pay check with it.

I am actually having an easier time learning Japanese than I had learning Dutch.

All their sounds are easy, their grammar pretty straightforward, almost simplistic at times. Ya, they have a boatload of kanji but I don't mind straightforward repetition and memorization, it is time consuming rather than difficult and confusing. Not saying that it is easy learning a new language, but I am definitely having less issues with Jap than Dutch.

As an ameriburger, Japanese really only has a few "odd" sounds, tsu (English only uses ts at the end of words), and hyo/ryo/kyo/etc. which people want to pronounce as hiyo/riyo/kiyo even though sho is a normal English sound and they can't into extrapolation.

The vowels, however, are exactly the same as in Spanish. I did badly at two semesters of Spanish in college, which was a great start for learning moon on my own. But it evicted most of my knowledge of Spanish grammar, so I want to think of Spanish words with Japanese grammar. (And I'm in Texas where there are a lot of Spanish speakers.)

It's hard to overstate how amazing it is to learn Japanese.

As someone who basically spent a decade here, and only bothered actually studying past the entry level "hurr I learned da kana" level a little over a year ago, the amount of shit I can read has gone through the roof. I'm no longer reliant on the whims of translators when I jump on sadpanda, I can comfortably browse Pixiv, and I can read most stuff at a slow pace.

People throw around shit like "it takes 4 years to learn Japanese", but what people don't understand is that isn't 4 years of studying and then you wake up fluent. It's reading new shit all the time, in a vastly superior form because you aren't relying on some Chinese college student's guesswork to capture the meaning of the scribbles.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assimil

Name of the company that does a bunch of the courses. They all heavily rely on the student listening to audio of conversations spoken by natives.
I use it as a supplement on top of the other stuff. One lesson a day, I listen to the recording, try to decipher what is being said, then look at the text/translation, listen to the recording again, read the text out loud, then listen to the recording again whilst speaking along with it. Then I do the exercises that go along with the lesson, usually consisting of writing/filling in the gaps etc.

I find that it helps enormously with pronunciation and developing a more naturally flowing conversational style.
>>
>>140885691
So are you living in Japan right now? How is it? I just finished relearning the kana and I want to go there so I can actually learn stuff but I'm a student currently so don't really have any money or time. Pretty much. It all goes to how willing you are to step outside your comfort zone.

Since we spoke of chinese, it reminds me of my university days where the chinese international students will be around for years and yet their english remain just as shitty as when they arrived. And the reason is simple, they stick to their own clique, rarely try to interact with the locals and stuck to using mandarin as much as possible.

I mean, I get that it's tough being stuck in a foreign land so it's nice to have your folks from your own country, but that means you're never going to improve. No wonder there's so much scandals about chinese students paying ghost-writers to do their assignments for them, but that's another story.

Conversely don't listen to the faggot who, in an attempt to convince themselves, tell you that you can learn Japanese by watching anime at least an hour a day.

Sit yo ass down and busy yourself with study material of the language you want to learn, it really is that easy/hard.

I don't even get why people see it as a hard vs easy thing, I have never approached it with that mentality, I have always just considered it fun. Even if I never got to use the language, I still find the learning process fun.

Well I suppose it depends on your native language as well.
Grammatically, Japanese is pretty straightforward. Pronunciation isn't hard either.
I've known people who've been living here for over 10 years but still can't quite say "schild en vriend" right.
And you have a point that we have words for every goddamn thing under the sun.

The only thing that keeps biting me in the ass is Kanji. No matter how much I study, there's just too damn many of them. Also, they arr rook same.
I went to Japan a couple weeks back and even though I could manage basic conversations, I was really struggling since I could hardly read anything.
Even if you have knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, if you can't read shit then you're still fucked.

Kanji are completely unnecessary for spoken Japanese, so obtaining fluency in it first makes learning kanji massively easier. The best way to do this is via radio dramas and audiobooks since they tend to use more varied vocab than anime and you don't have to pay attention to visuals. Plus it's the easiest way to learn how the pitch accent in Japanese works.

Books and manga written in kana are also an option though they're aimed at schoolkids and have a basic vocab level.

The only way to properly learn kanji is the same way native moons learn them: WRITE EACH ONE HUNDREDS OF TIMES

Long ago I made the decision to not learn to write kanji (because input systems), and I think it was the right decision, but I stalled once I hit about the 6th grade. They just start looking too alike at that point. If I had been writing them HUNDREDS OF TIMES, I might be better able to recognize the differences.

You have different stadnards.
Perhaps i should have said 2k is a great starting level, but not by any means a final goal. you can converse with people with them not thinking you're a lunatic most of the time(which is what the original anon meant, i think). Now, you'll be able to learn faster by talking with the natives and those 2k will soon turn into 4k.

I would only be upset if the other translation and editing is clearly inferior, considering i mostly do these for myself.

If the editing and translation is GTO or CGR tier it distracts me too much from fapping

The idea for the scheme was born out of my own frustration at a problem that most certainly exists, which is scanlators not being able to name their files for shit. I started devising the scheme as a result of that and shared the results with the world as a way to show how it could be done. Any actual adoption of the scheme was always a "would be nice" kind of thing.

Nicely enough some uploaders at madokami have actually picked the scheme up because what do you know, it works. There's also been some minor improvements to it as of late as a result of that and the scheme itself now lives here:

You should have a big fucking "DONATE TO PATREON" credits page where you say bullshit like "the more money I get, the more shit I can translate" and offer a 5 dollar raffle where one lucky winner a month gets something of their choice translated.
