I just want more Pale Cocoon, Angel's Egg, Ghost in the Shell, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Evangelion, Patlabor, Millennium Actress, Ergo Proxy, etc etc etc, esque stuff.
It's not about novelty so much as substance. I'm sick of the pandering, I like to watch things that are actually as though you're looking into parts of some other person's world. An amalgamation of a team of people's lives made for the sake of making something, not engineering it for an audience. Whether it's animation or Hollywood, everything is played very safe, it is composed of thoroughly tested archetypes, and it comes through contrived.
The stuff I mentioned above influenced me heavily. There's nothing wrong with having the other genres, there are many ways, reasons, and value systems to watch with, but right now it's taken on an artificial polarity. Animation is more or less dead for me, at present.

Although my desire for that kind of stuff comes from wanting something, anything, outside the normal anime norm, I think our desires are still pretty much the same. I don't actually mind pandering in sustainable, positive doses, but having pandering literally define a whole medium (and a lot of mediums in general) is almost insufferable. I get that ultimately these industries are about making money, not making quality works or effort put into them, but I still would think that a substantial number of creators would be in it to tell great stories rather than regurgitating the same shit in a slightly different pattern.
I keep watching for the occasional exception, but I really wish more people took risks and made something different with a lot of love and effort put into it. When creators put their hearts and souls into something, you can practically taste it, and it's wonderful.

The anime is trying to be "different" so they add in something that manages to be wacky and totally commonplace and uninteresting at the same time.
Also school anime are complete fucking shit, just do like I do and don't bother watching them. Or drop a show the instant school settings seems clear that they are here to stay. Literally the only exception I've given to this rule is Code Geass, and I am very happy with it. I enjoy anime much more now.

This is part of a bigger problem with relationships in anime, I think. The main girl and guy rarely love each other because of mutual respect and trust. They scream "AISHITERU" without knowing much beyond "that person was nice to me and other people". Liking someone because they're nice is not "love". It's the beginnings of affection.
Also, sexless protags who run away from any hint of romance need to die. No "normal, average highschooler" is terrified of the prospect that a girl is interested in him. He might be nervous, unsure, maybe even a little scared. He is not phobic; the protag's usual reaction implies deep-seated psychological issues. It's even worse when contrasted with the "creepy guy" in the background who has an interest in sex - he's always over-the-top and lascivious. The message I get is you're either horrified by or unnaturally interested in women. What the fuck?

Typically, Shonen ai revolves around the MC trying to "get the girl". This is what the series is based on and when it happens, the series usually ends. They keep making more chapters to sell more copies to the audience who it panders to, because ultimately: that's what the business is about.
Shonen ai probably doesn't have what you're looking for because a large chunk of the genre is the harem subgenre (which follows all the clichés we're all tired of, ex: series doesn't have any romantic developments until 200 chapters in)

Fucking anyone is 'nice'. And the anime MCs aren't even THAT nice usually. The way they are 'nice' just means that they aren't enormous assholes like the other males they're shown alongside to make them look better. And that's the incredibly sad fact.
The fact that they know that the reader/watcher has no redeemable qualities.
They are appealing to a demographic that sits at home and thinks they must be really nice people just because they're not assholes. But that's not being nice. That's just being boring.
Real world 'nice' means doing volunteering, means being the person always offering to help (mind you, it doesn't count if you're asked first), it means being the one often paying for others for no reason, and generally going out of their way to be nice.
But anime MCs aren't "Nice".
They're bland.
They have absolutely no unique color as individuals.
Just like the readers they're supposed to represent.
And they will call them 'nice'.
Because no concrete compliment applies to them.

Agreed. My opinion would change 180° if the MC was kind to them/helped them a few times/saved their life and they developed platonic respect for said MC. Platonic respect as in: not wanting to spread their legs for said character, but still have a good opinion of the MC for what he did.
But the constant self-inserting, wish fulfillment tropes of "various girls can like the MC (me) for being kind" is the epitome of bad writing. Have a girl who looks up to the MC like a brother, like a father, like an uncle, like a teacher, like a role model, etc. Have girls who like other boys in the series. Have girls who genuinely dislike the MC and aren't affected by cliché harem tropes. Anything is better than repeating the same old rehashed idea over and over again.
