Tora is on point in this episode. Nagare's superiority complex felt unnecessary and random, i didn't notice it anytime before, so why the heck is this suddenly happening now.
But it's obvious that in the end, he's not evil to the core. He had some stupid reasons but I liked Nagare, he's chill and fun. That scene where he laid lifeless actually got me. RIP Nagare nii-chan.

Sorry anon, my impression on it is solely as a filthy secondary. I would assume the editor asked for it to be stretched out, or find something to prolong it. But maybe it was the mangaka who didn't want to finish it so quickly. Either way, once they defeat Hakumen, it is over. No more Ushio, Tora, or Asako, because adding a new villain afterwards would only look stupid in Ushio's setting. In the anime the extra episodes are working out fine, but I don't know what the pacing was like in the manga.
Everyone forgetting about him was one thing, but this episode was just all-around bad.

The whole show is filled with plot devices that feel terrible. When I think about it, it doesn't HAVE to be this way. Hakumen no Mono, even sealed, is exerting its influence and constantly plotting against the Beast Spear, but they way it's portrayed feels more like shitty plot devices that come out of nowhere. If a bit more time was spent showing Hakumen acting to take control of the situation and not have one big plot device happening one after another (by using more foreshadowing, by not having Ushio constantly at the center of everything), it could definitely be cool. The setting could be scary and depressing, with a world psychologically controlled by Hakumen no Mono, but it just doesn't.
Quite frankly, I went into this show expecting what the OP1 showed and was sorely disappointed. At least Tora occasionally fills the badass quota.
Speaking of "is it really this retarded in the manga", what about Kirio's adoptation? Does Mayuko's family really take in an unknown kid just because people from a cult show up and ask them to?

Ushio still believed Nagare didn't go fully evil and he was right. He was just empty inside and fighting Tora was his dream. Hakumen tempted him to do it now, but he could have done it after Hakumen was dealt with too. He didn't give a shit about the Hakumen situation either way, he just wanted his fight. He was eager to do it and since people have been literally begging him to do it, he just couldn't help himself.
Ushio wasn't wrong for wanting to spare him, but in that situation Nagare kinda deserved it. He timed it horribly and he was wasting time in a cruical period.

Hekumen no mono power comes from fear (againt him and against the unknown). It realized that he was growing weaker because Ushio and Tora were bringing hope that they could together beat Hakumen no Mono. So it made everybody forget about them so that it could have everybody fear his power again
While giving Hakumen the ability to take away everyone's memories willy nilly is dumb, I actually felt like the developments we got from the amnesia were pretty good.

Hey, so this part was actually animation made for the opening after all, or did I just not notice when it happened in-episode?
So after reading the betrayal again in the manga I can see the reasoning behind his betrayal.
Self loathing and apathy can drive people to do a lot of things. I actually knew a guy who reminds me a lot of Nagare.
From how I see it he was constantly scorned for being who he was until he became someone else, someone who didn't try. Then Ushino looked up to him anyway as someone he could believe him. Wanting to crush that because he sees himself as something detestable makes sense. It's not a rational position, but he is not written to be in an entirely rational state of mind by that point.
The stress of the war and the realization that he indeed in not the chosen one, and the thing he thought he had devoted his life to meant next to nothing would hurt. The realization that despite himself he was not a large fish in a pond but one in an ocean. Being scorned for being the best and realizing you simply aren't.
I can see why he did it. I can see the avenue of corruption.
