End game stuff is stressful. I remember running Naxx when it was the endgame in WotLC, and there was that one one boss you had to do all that moving around not to die and I would always get killed.
Though I remember, I think I got the one-handed mace that had the highest spellpower in the game and I was an spriest and the guild I was going with was all like, "Sure you can roll for it" but then a bunch of them got all resentful after the fact because they said it was for healers.
It was a pretty cool mace though, it had a cool glowing orb right in the middle when that sort of thing wasn't on every other weapon.

Back when I played world of warcraft I was part of a raiding guild and obviously minmaxed too, but we also had a fair amount of casual people in our guild who didn't minmax their character and usually didn't raid with us. That's not true (entirely). Leveling up was fun when the quests were varied and it felt rewarding to get new powers and explore new areas. Like, getting my first epic flyer in BC, it was such a blast just zipping around seeing new things. And when you had a guild of people who didn't bail in the middle of a raid, it was mostly fun to work as a team to achieve goals.
The problem is, unlike other games, once you get to the end, it becomes less fun and more serious, more like a job you do because you have to---that's where the concept of addiction probably isn't misplaced.

Maplestory had, for the longest time, a cash shop in which all the cash shop items were untradeable, 99% were just cosmetic items, and the remainin 1% was exp cards too expensive for realistic regular use, and pets that would loot from the ground in your stead, no big deal.
Then came the gift boxes, allowing you to trade cash shop items.
Still no big deal people didn't use them that much.
But then came the cubes. They let you 'awaken' an item, and with another cube you could reset the item so you could try to awaken it so that the RNG could give you something better.
Then came enhancing.
And enhanced scrolling.

7 new layers of cash shop-exclusive upgrades for weapons came out one after the other, making anyone who didn't drop at least a couple hundred a month wouldn't ever be able to do a tenth of the damage the new endgame required.
You would need a party of 40 to do what the obsessive cash shopper was doing on their own, only no one would ever want you in their party with your puny equips.
MS went from having more than a hundred thousand active people at all times to maybe a few thousand at peak hours.

You could play a paladin tank with a paladin healer and dominate 5 man dungeons. You can laugh as you and your healer stun the same mob and drop lay on hands at the same time, cursing at each other for thinking the same thing at the same time.
Of course there's more content in the vanilla end game, but it's fun doing what a paladin tank is good at when nobody else is thinking about playing a paladin tank, because they'd rather spam flash of light in raids.

I play a shitter of a grind game now and it's not any better than ye olde RO days. Log in everyday to report to your guild and give them the quota tax exp and put loot into the guild stash to advance. You can't solo here, unless you have GM connections or mommy' credit card, get in a guild and make a name for yourself or get kicked out of the server. End game is kinda depressing, your stats steadily drain out until even the newbies overtake your progress because new updates and make it all so easier for fresher vict- er.. players since the developer needs to milk more people dry. Gone are the days in vanilla where you could enjoy open-world exploration, instead you get this min-maxing madness to stay cool and fit in with the constantly evolving pvp scene.
Oh well, at least the mini-games can be amusing and the graphics are top notch 3dcan't log out though, FML

This is a problem of perspective. In the one scene, either the enemies are really strong, or the protagonist's party are really weak.
In Grimgar, the enemies are all extremely dangerous and literally fighting for their lives. Nonetheless, some people flip that around in their heads and instead decide that it in fact must be that the protagonist and co. are all incredibly weak.
