I know, right. Did you see both choices? The "bad" end is one of my favourite things ever, it was so done. Didn't see that change of character coming at all, but it made so much sense in retrospect. Although the entire second half is all fantastic. I'd rather not comment on how much is to go for fear of spoiling it, but let's just say there is still plenty of amazing stuff you haven't seen yet.

I saw both choices yeah. I went for the good choice for now, but I plan to go back and read what happens with the other choice after I get to the end with this one. I'm gonna have a really busy weekend, so I'm hoping to finish this tonight, but I'm not sure if that'll happen judging by your post since it seems like there's still plenty left to go.

Look on the bright side, you won't have to deal with Kanji.

But seriously, get a screen reader. You should be able to use Anki and texthooker, at least depending on whether or not you feel comfortable with your screen reader, and you can listen to drama CDs.

That's a shame in my opinion, the other ending of that choice is much more impactful in the spur of the moment, when you're filled with the adrenaline of the build-up, while the true ending is far better as the last thing you read in the VN so it's what lingers in your memory as it ends. I guess it can't be helped now though.

You don't just do book learnin' and eventually read or listen to something and suddenly it clicks.

The struggle of having to see and hear things and be frustrated is a universal experience to all japanese learners, regardless of method.
The longer you put off diving in to native material the more upsetting it's going to be that all the time you've spent studying grammar rules, example sentences, and doing anki hasn't done much to help you cross _some_ of the barriers.

It'd good enough that I can see myself re-reading it down the line, so I'm not too concerned about it. It was mostly a matter of I wanted to rush to finish it before the weekend so I picked the ending I wanted to see more first on the offchance that there'd be a lot of overlap or if the routes/endings would come relatively shortly after the choice. I USUALLY do what you said and put the endings/routes I'm looking forward to the most at the end though, but I find your sentiment of "the one you do last is what lingers in your memory" doesn't really apply to me; I just remember things for my favorite ending(s)/girl(s), regardless of where they were in the order I read.

So how exactly do you guys learn vocabulary? Especially one that contains unknown Kanji.
>>
>>140833933
Anki.
>>
>>140834009
I mean how do you memorize it?

So let's say you have 20 new words to learn. Some contain Kanji you don't know. Do you simply look at the words, maybe pronounce them, and cycle through the vocabulary until you can recall it all? Or do you write it down? How many times? Do you use mnemonics?
>>
>>140834046
Just do it
>>
>>140834046
Repetition is all. I mumble the reading and meaning a couple times for the ones that I frequently forget, maybe make up a mini-story based on the kanjis looks but that's rare.

>>140834501

Sometimes it takes some time to remember it but try to always have that kana in your head and think about it during the day and of course it's gonna take some time to learn 100 kanas just be patient with it and don't force these 100 kanas each day shit that i see some anons do

Is the problem that you're mixing up kanji? Then do RTK, KanjiDamage, studying radicals or any other method that lets you tackle kanji separately. Doing it might feel like a waste because you're not technically learning Japanese but trust me, it'll make vocab retention a piece of cake later on.

If you're just having trouble memorizing anything independently of whether it uses kanji or not then maybe try reducing the amount of new cards per day or splitting your deck up into both production and recognition and do both alongside. Don't burn yourself out and do everything at a pace you feel most comfortable with.

The way I personally study vocab is that I have one deck for recognition where see a Japanese word and have to pronounce and translate it, and a production deck where I'm given an English word and type in the answer in Japanese into a text field. I feel doing both makes retention easier since immediately after learning a batch of words I'm forced to type them and I have to get the exact reading correct or else the IME won't suggest the right word.

It's normal for mined words to be harder to remember than Core ones. Core is presented in an order that's designed to build on itself, like words using the same kanji will appear at the same time. There are also "easier" words in Core which you might not mine if you came across them in reading.

But in terms of whether there's a point, well, in general the idea of mining is to learn the words that are common and relevant in the sort of materials you read rather than learning an unrelated set of words which might not be the most common ones in said kind of material. But for the most common words they're going to be common in virtually everything. So if the words you're mining are more difficult than you would like or aren't necessarily the "most" common words, at first it's fine to do Core and not worry about it. Though if you prefer mining it's also fine to do that instead.
>>
>>140835118
I don't think the words I was mining were uncommon. Stuff like 雑誌 and 目的地. I have a feeling they will eventually pop up in core, so, does it make sense to mine them in advance or just wait for core to naturally weave them in? I reduced the amount of daily core cards to do these and I feel like it's actually slowing me down
>>
>>140835225
In that case it sounds like you would be better off just doing Core for now.
>>
Does it ever end? Do the words ever stop coming?
If I had known the effort required to learn Japanese I wonder if I would've started it
>>
>>140834046

>>

>>
>>140835612

>It's normal for mined words to be harder to remember than Core ones.
Ergo it makes a hell of a lot more sense to increase the amount of new words a day to be introduced using the Core10k/2k/6k whatever deck than stopping at some arbitrary point like so many anons suggest.

I really wish this stupid "do only Core2k then make a mining deck" meme would die out. For the same reason that the first 2000 words of Core2k are optimised for rapid vocab acquisition, so are the remaining 8000. It only does longer term detriment to beginners who end up running into huge vocabulary imbalances that make it a world of irritation every time they decide to read/watch/listen to something new.
The ten thousand words of the optimised core 10k deck a really a baseline vocabulary for a general range of accessibility. I don't know if the guide explains this but beginners seem to have no idea I have a feeling that most of the people who make the meme suggestion are merely parroting things they have heard from other beginners who have heard things from other beginners, ad infinitum.
>>
>>140836046
Unrelated but, is it possible to switch from the 2k/6k deck to the 10k one without losing progress, when I'm done with the former? Or how does it work?
>>
>>140835906
>>140835894
Then why the god damn deck doesn't say a while...
maybe i have a hard time with it 'cause in my native language words describing time are more specific. Ty anon
>>
>>140836198
Idk
From my experience the majority of words are like this, you'll look them up and there will be like 3 meanings for everything but it's really just one concept a majority of the time
>>
>>140836046
I can agree with sticking to Core at first but I really can't agree with doing all 10,000. I completed all of Core6k and honestly wish I had started mining sooner -- once you hit a certain point, the words in Core aren't the same words you most desperately need to know in order to get by better in reading. If your goal is to get to a level where you can read things as soon as possible, you should start specializing right after you reach the point where Core stops handing you words which are profoundly common (around 2000-4000). If you want to read fiction, for example, you need to be spending your time on words like 立ち尽くす, 尻餅をつく, or くぐもった声 more than you need to spend time learning "easy" words in Core that you could have guessed anyway. Likewise if you only read cooking blogs or something, if you want to comprehend their substance, you need to learn cooking-specific words more than you need to know the words in Core10k. Even if you power through Core it's not as efficient as focusing first on the words that are most relevant to what you read, and contain the meaningful parts of the content. And that's not to mention the questionable or insufficient definitions that plague Core.

I strongly suspect that the people who say they have 10,000 words known in Anki but can't read shit stuck with Core all the way to the end. If you specialize sooner you're much more likely to be able to read the stuff you read by 8-9k words.
>>
How do i get a list of the 2k/6k words in the order they are supposed to appear ?
>>
Core should just die. Beginners should be advised to complete the first 2,000 words of Anon 5k instead and then mine. Too many people fall into the Core6k/10k trap.

>>
>>140836744
Core2k words are so by and large generic (as any list of most common words in any language would be) that I can't imagine anon5k being any better.
>>
Does anyone know if there is such thing as anime with Japanese subtitles?

>I have a feeling that most of the people who make the meme suggestion are merely parroting things they have heard from other beginners who have heard things from other beginners, ad infinitum.
More like it's just a fact that while Core2k is tight and focused more or less, Core6k and 10k go off the fucking rails with words that's just plain uncommon in fiction AND real life. Certainly, mining decks will leads to more struggling because the order isn't optimized, but the massive gains in proficiency compared to time spent more than make up for it.

And besides. After Core2k, one's main source of vocabulary acquisition should be reading, with anki just providing a boost. Whether you do a mining deck or continue core (or do both) is not a life-changing decision, it all arrives at the same stop.
>>
>>140837725
There is
>>
So how long should core2k take? After one month of anki I noticed I only have 150~ mature cards which feels low
>>
>>140837844
How many cards become mature is really outside of your direct control, so I wouldn't worry about it. Core2k "should" take as long as you want (assuming minimum of 10 words a day, dont go slower than that)
>>
What are the best beginner reading/listening ressources?
>>
>>140837971
Animated materials straight from the land of 日ノ本.
>>
>>140837760
>mining decks will leads to more struggling because the order isn't optimized
I love this "optimized" meme.

Having all the words that have the same kanji in them next to each other isn't optimised. It makes it harder to tell them all apart.
>>
>>140838363
I disagree.
>>
>>140838475
>wake up
>watch raw spongebob eps for listening practice
>shadow Sandy the squirrel's accent because it sounds the most intelligent
>start 英語 anki reps

>>
I'm still beginning on learning Japanese, but how would you say "It's spring, but why is it so cold?" in Japanese with proper grammar?
>>
>>140838853
It's more like "let's practice all words that have 'car' in them today".

>>
>>140836113
Not that I'm aware of. If you want to transition your best bet would be to suspend the first ~6k of core10k and just run the two decks side by side.
>>
>>140838363
>It makes it harder to tell them all apart.
Which means you need to pay more attention to the kanji and recognise it better, thus improving your retention 10 fold.

When choosing my Japanese name in kanji can I just invent a reading or do I have to follow some list of possible readings? I want to create a name for myself in kanji, I'm still keeping my surname though to honor my German ancestors.
I'm thinking of naming myself 央劉 「ヒロシマ」. The translation is something like Central Weapon of War.

For mining you either want a texthooker that can indirectly support it, or rikai + a clipboard capture addon for your browser

No, you don't need kanji because only vocabs matter. You don't even need kana, just the pronunciation and romanji is enough.

There are a lot of kanji -> romanji sites out there.

What animes do 16 year old japanese males like?

I'm gonna have to socialize with the family and may as well bring something to watch with the kid.

Unless of course he's somehow watched every anime already.

He is Japanese isn't he? He already has every anime implanted into his brain, doesn't matter if the anime doesn't even exist yet.

Why is the Kanji for Japan sun and book?
>>
>>140847850
Because it got popularized mainly through the medium of anime in the 1930-1940s.
>>
>>140847850
本 can also mean "origin". So 日本 is "land of the rising sun"
>>
>>140848016

>>140848016
ok now im really curious where people get the "rising" and "land" from now
>>
>>140848495
Because they heard Nippon called that in English and they think it carries over into Japanese.
>>
>>140848495
The land part comes from the country that the word describes, "the land of 日本" and the rising comes from the "sun's origin", the eastern horizon, where the sun rises.
I always thought this was obvious.
>>
lol keep telling me i cant learn japanese, haters. we'll see how right you are after i'm done with 4 years of japanese college courses and 150,000 hours of anki training.
>>
>>140848495
Because it's a country, so there's land, and the sun rises in the east, and Japan is to the far east. Holy shit you people are autistic, hung up on these details. The origin of the sun is the east, the sun rises from its origin.
