Storytelling was a wreck.
Using the exact same plot elements, you could have made the story a lot more interesting, with some selective editing, edit the dialogue and change some shots.
And I really don't know enough about kabaneri or kabane, so far nothing is playing on my expectations, everything is going as would be expected. I didn't learn anything.

I posted in the previous thread, but they missed some spots to to have little moments that increase your emotional attachment, and instead of using foreshadowing to increase tension, they used it to defuse tension by letting you know what was going to happen ahead of time, removing any of the edge that could have been there.
The episode narrative really could have been what it felt like to have someone who is human, who you share an emotional attachment with, turns kabaneri on you. Focus on the sadness, the betrayal of expectations, paranoia, guilt and shock. That would segue nicely with the MC backstory about his sister.
However, what we see is from minor characters, and people who are antagonistic. Instead of letting us empathize with them, they just seem stupid and shallow from the kabaneri point of view we are shown.
I mean, even if we can justify why the lords, peasants and samurai get all uppity, it's really not shown to us because of the story telling. We don't feel it either. From the point of view presented, they just look like retards. And you can tell, because most posts just write them off as idiots.

You remind me of one of the core, primary criticisms of the Star Wars Prequels (on my mind since it came up with a friend recently): that the audience was constantly told what to feel or expected to know things without being SHOWN them, or shown the feelings and interactions growing naturally. There was never any sort of connection, people would be "established" as "best friends" by talking in an elevator about how they did something in the past the audience never saw, and then the actual behavior of them would have none of that.
The audience needs to be able to see the connections and pathos of those involved and feel at least some empathy. And you're right that this episode was all set up to really make that happen in a great way. The writers seem to have not been up to the task though which is a genuine shame.
