Ikoma's gun has something to do with actually using gunpowder. I think it's a mixture of gunpowder and steam to get the really high pressures needed to get high missile velocities. They're using soft metal projectiles so the explosives shape the soft lead at high velocities into a piercing shape- like a shaped charge.. or something.
