More likely though, he probably was bitten in the past, but doesn't remember it. The stone was enchanted by someone to partially surpress his Kabane side, like the OP shows, and, since they had gotten to it early enough, it was still in a latent state, so no Kabane heart.

She's good for reasons besides being cute. She's basically what the bushi think they are. A sheepdog to guard the sheep. In this metaphor, kabane are like wolves. Like how dogs are domesticated wolves, kabaneri are "domesticated" kabane that have the strength and quasi-immortality of kabane turned to a useful purpose. And just like sheepdogs, the ordinary people (sheep) are scared of their own protectors because they only see them as another kabane (wolf). The distinction between domesticated protector and wild beast is lost on them.
I find that whole setup rather interesting. It explains why her attitude is so haughty, because she's the only sheepdog on that train. Ikoma is basically a puppy without fangs yet. The bushi for all their bluster are just more ornery sheep that she could bring down easily if she wanted.
